The Zamfara State Hisbah Commission has arrested a local cleric on allegations of engaging in immoral conduct and sending explicit materials to a young man via mobile phone, a commission official confirmed on Tuesday.

The suspect, whose name has not been officially released, was apprehended in Gusau, the state capital, following a complaint from the young man’s family. According to a source within the Hisbah Commission, the cleric allegedly cultivated a close relationship with the victim before the communications turned inappropriate. “The cleric is well known in his community and used his position to gain the trust of the young man and his family,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The commission said it recovered a mobile phone and other items from the cleric, which are being analyzed as part of the investigation. A Hisbah official confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the probe. “We have a duty to investigate thoroughly and ensure that justice is served in accordance with Sharia law,” the official told reporters.

The case has drawn attention to the growing challenge of online exploitation in Zamfara State, where technology is increasingly being used to facilitate criminal behavior. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the Hisbah Commission, which has recently intensified efforts to curb immoral conduct and drug abuse among residents.

The commission has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities. “We will not tolerate any form of immorality, especially when it involves individuals who are expected to be role models in their communities,” the official added. “Our doors are open for anyone with useful information.”

As the investigation continues, the cleric remains in custody. The commission has not indicated when he may be charged or when his case might be heard in court. However, a statement is expected soon after the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
