The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, has vehemently denied swirling social media reports that its Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, was implicated in a drug‑related investigation conducted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the Corps described the allegations as “false, misleading, and a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation of its leadership.”
The controversy began after the NDLEA announced the arrest of a suspended Amotekun officer, Ekujumi Julius, and his wife over alleged drug trafficking. The anti‑narcotics agency reportedly recovered illicit substances from the couple during a raid. Shortly after the news broke, several unverified videos and posts began circulating on social media, suggesting that the Amotekun Commander was somehow complicit in the illegal activity or had attempted to interfere with the investigation.
Reacting swiftly, the Amotekun Corps Public Relations Officer, S.A. Jimoh Adeniken, issued a categorical denial. “Neither the Amotekun Corps nor its Commander had any role in the arrest or prosecution of the individuals as being portrayed in trending online videos and reports,” the statement read. The Corps explained that Ekujumi Julius was a former officer who had been suspended from the Amotekun Corps long before the NDLEA’s operation, and that any attempt to link his personal conduct to the Commander or the agency was “malicious and unfounded.”
The statement also clarified that the Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, has a distinguished record of service and has never been involved in any drug‑related case. The Corps expressed disappointment that “unscrupulous elements” would weaponise a routine NDLEA arrest to attack the integrity of a public official. It called on the public to disregard the viral claims and to verify information through official channels before sharing.
The NDLEA has not issued any statement indicating that the Amotekun Commander was connected to the case. In fact, the agency’s initial press release on the arrest of Ekujumi Julius and his wife made no mention of any senior Amotekun officer. The couple is currently in NDLEA custody and is expected to face charges in court.
Meanwhile, the Amotekun Corps has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and professional conduct. It warned that it will take legal action against individuals or groups found to be spreading false information aimed at destabilising the agency or blackmailing its leadership. “We will not tolerate the use of social media to assassinate the character of our officers who have worked tirelessly to secure Ondo State,” the statement added.
Reactions from civil society groups have been mixed. While some commended the Corps for its swift rebuttal, others called for a deeper investigation into the original NDLEA arrest to ensure that no security personnel are involved in drug trafficking. The Ondo State Government has not yet commented on the controversy.
As the dust settles, the Amotekun Corps has urged residents to continue partnering with security agencies and to report any suspicious activity through established channels. “Let us not allow fake news to distract us from the collective fight against crime,” the statement concluded.
