ILORIN, Kwara State — Security operatives in Kwara State have reportedly disrupted a suspected coordinated attack plot targeting Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, arresting a suspected kidnapping kingpin allegedly connected to the abduction of a traditional ruler in the state.
The operation was carried out following intelligence reports indicating that armed groups were planning to launch attacks and kidnapping operations during the Sallah festive period, when large gatherings and movement across communities typically increase security vulnerability. According to security sources, the suspects had been under surveillance before the coordinated operation was executed.
Kwara State has in recent months experienced repeated incidents of kidnappings and armed violence, particularly in rural communities and forest-adjacent areas used as operational hideouts by armed groups. Security agencies have responded with intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at preventing further escalation of attacks across the state.
During the latest operation, security personnel reportedly arrested a suspected kidnapping kingpin believed to be part of a wider criminal network operating across Kwara and neighbouring states. Investigators said the suspect is being interrogated over alleged involvement in multiple abduction cases, including the kidnapping of a traditional ruler earlier in the year.
Recent verified security reports from the state indicate that armed groups have repeatedly targeted high-profile victims, including monarchs and community leaders, often demanding large ransom payments. In one documented case earlier in 2026, a monarch and his wife were abducted in Ifelodun Local Government Area, with attackers demanding about ₦400 million for their release, prompting extensive police investigations and arrests of suspected accomplices linked to the operation.
Security officials say the arrested suspect is expected to help investigators identify other members of the network, including operational commanders, logistics coordinators, and hideouts used for planning and execution of abductions. Follow-up operations are ongoing across forest corridors and border communities where such groups are believed to operate.
Authorities further stated that intelligence gathered ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir period indicated possible coordinated strikes aimed at both civilian gatherings and strategic locations. The intervention is said to have prevented what could have developed into simultaneous attacks across multiple communities.
Kwara State has become one of the focal points of Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis in the north-central region, with recurring incidents involving rural dwellers, travellers, and traditional rulers. Security reports over the past year show that attacks have persisted across several local government areas, driven largely by armed groups exploiting forest cover and limited security presence in remote settlements.
In a separate development earlier in the year, police in the state also intercepted suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate in Ilorin and recovered firearms and ammunition, following intelligence-led tracking operations that disrupted a planned coordinated attack.
Security analysts note that the pattern of arrests and foiled attacks reflects a growing reliance on intelligence-based policing strategies in Kwara, particularly during high-risk periods such as festive seasons. However, they also caution that kidnapping networks in the region remain adaptive, often regrouping quickly after security disruptions.
Traditional rulers have increasingly been targeted in recent years, with multiple reported abductions across Kwara South generating widespread concern among residents and prompting calls for stronger military deployment in vulnerable communities.
Security agencies have assured residents that enhanced surveillance, patrols, and inter-agency coordination will continue throughout the Eid period and beyond to prevent any resurgence of planned attacks. Officials also urged the public to provide timely intelligence on suspicious movements, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in tackling kidnapping networks operating in forested areas.
Investigations into the arrested suspect are ongoing, and authorities are expected to release further details as operations continue against remaining members of the syndicate.
