The search for justice for Wendy Achumba, the 23‑year‑old nursing student whose decapitated body was discovered in her off‑campus apartment in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, took a decisive turn on Thursday evening when youths of Umuadara village arrested the first suspect, a 28‑year‑old vulcanizer named Onyema Okonkwo. In a video that has since gone viral, Okonkwo confessed to the act that has thrown the quiet community into panic and revulsion: he and an accomplice, one Emmanuel, repeatedly raped the student on the evening of May 21, 2026, before he struck her head with a stick and Emmanuel allegedly produced a knife and severed her head. The confession, which circulated widely on social media, laid bare the brutal sequence of events that followed Wendy’s refusal to submit to the men’s sexual advances. In the video, a shirtless Okonkwo, his face etched with a mixture of defiance and feigned remorse, recounted how he and Emmanuel went to Wendy’s residence around 7 p.m. after she had rejected their advances.

“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. We went to her house around 7 p.m. I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once. After that, I hit her with a stick,” Okonkwo said, adding that he did not know that Emmanuel had returned with a knife to kill her. The confession exposed the premeditated nature of the attack: two men who felt entitled to her body, and who, when denied, decided to forcibly take what they wanted and then silence her permanently.

The discovery of Wendy’s body on the same Thursday evening had already sent a shockwave through the community. According to Punch and other news outlets, neighbours grew alarmed when Wendy failed to come out of her room or respond to repeated knocks. They forced the door open – only to find her lifeless, her head severed from her torso. The door, residents noted, had been locked from the inside, a detail that initially suggested suicide until the brutality of the scene became evident. A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity told Punch: “We forced the door open, it was still locked from the inside. Someone checked and dismissed fears of rape, but her phone was missing.”

The missing mobile phone, the locked door and the beheading all pointed to a calculated effort to eliminate evidence and escape. But the trail did not go cold. Youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa, acting on intelligence gathered within the community, led a group of youths to track down Okonkwo. The suspect was arrested and, after being confronted, broke down and provided the videotaped confession that would later be broadcast across social media platforms. In the confession, Okonkwo also revealed that Wendy had been living alone in the building at the time of the attack. He told community members that two other nursing students who shared the compound had left for their nursing experience, leaving Wendy as the sole occupant. “The owner of the house is based in America. There were three students occupying the house. But two went for their nursing experience, leaving only her in the compound,” a community source told Vanguard.

Wendy Achumba, a native of Ngwa in Abia State, had completed her Midwifery programme and was undergoing post‑basic training at the College of Nursing in Umulogho at the time of her death. Described by neighbours as a calm, peaceful and focused student, she was last seen alive the day before her body was found. Her murder has thrown the student community and the entire Umulogho area into a state of grief and fear, with many students now questioning the safety of off‑campus accommodation. The incident has also re‑ignited concerns over the security of nursing students, especially those in post‑basic training who often live in remote, under‑protected areas.

Following the confession, the Umuadara youths handed Okonkwo over to the police. The Imo State Police Command, through its spokesman DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed that one suspect had been arrested for preliminary questioning and that a manhunt had been launched for his accomplice, Emmanuel. In a statement issued Friday, Okoye appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that “the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to ensure those behind the act are brought to justice.”

The news of the arrest and the content of the confession, however, did little to calm the anger of residents. On Thursday evening, tension spiked as angry youths confronted police officers who arrived at the scene. The corpse of the deceased had not yet been evacuated to the morgue as of the time of filing some of the early reports, further inflaming emotions. It was only after the intervention of senior police officers that the body was eventually recovered and deposited at a morgue for autopsy.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation on social media, with hashtags such as #JusticeForWendy and #SayNoToRape trending on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Many Nigerians are calling not only for the swift prosecution of the suspects but also for an investigation into the broader security environment in student‑populated areas of Imo State. Others are demanding stronger penalties for sexual violence, noting that the attack on Wendy Achumba is one of several high‑profile cases of rape and murder of women in the South‑East in recent months.

For now, Okonkwo remains in police custody, while Emmanuel is still at large. The Imo State Police Command has promised to release updates as the investigation progresses. But for the family of Wendy Achumba, for the students of the College of Nursing, and for the women of Imo State, the time for waiting is over. The call is for justice – not just for Wendy, but for every woman whose voice has been silenced by violence.
