A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Akure has ordered the detention of Oba Adewale Boboye, the Ajagunode of Ode Community, pending the perfection of his bail conditions, following his arraignment on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The traditional ruler was remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, where he remains in custody as of Sunday, May 24, 2026, after failing to meet the court’s stringent bail requirements. This development is the latest in a series of high-profile prosecutions under the state’s anti-land grabbing law, signaling that the era of impunity for powerful individuals involved in land-related crimes is coming to an end.

The monarch was arraigned on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, issuing threats via a telephone conversation to one Ajilegan, forceful takeover of a property belonging to Olrof Company Limited in Igoba, Akure, and the alleged use of thugs to dispossess the rightful owners of the land. The prosecution argued that these actions were capable of causing a breach of public peace, undermining lawful ownership of property, and creating insecurity around land transactions within the state. The alleged offenses are in direct violation of Sections 3(1), 3(2), 9(1), 9(3), and 9(4) of the Ondo State Property Protection and Documentation Law, 2024. This law, which prescribes severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment for illegal land resale and forceful occupation, has become the government’s primary legal tool in its crackdown on land grabbers.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum, and further directed that one of the sureties must be a recognized chief or traditional ruler within the Akure Magisterial Jurisdiction who must possess landed property subject to verification by the court. Pending the fulfillment of these stringent conditions, the monarch was remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre. This decision reflects the judiciary’s firm stance on ensuring that individuals accused of land grabbing are held accountable, while also upholding the rights of the accused.

The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, who also chairs the Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force, has reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating land grabbing and all forms of criminality associated with illegal land transactions in Ondo State. The task force has intensified its crackdown on fraudulent land dealings, forceful takeovers, intimidation of landowners, and acts capable of discouraging investment in the state. Ajulo warned that the government would not only prosecute land grabbers but would also investigate professionals and collaborators who aid such illegal activities, including lawyers, surveyors, and land agents. This inclusive approach is seen as a necessary step to dismantle the networks that enable land grabbing to thrive.

The arrest and detention of Oba Boboye are the latest in a string of high-profile cases being pursued by the state’s anti-land grabbing task force, which has already secured the remand of several other individuals for similar offenses. The case has attracted significant public attention, as it underscores the government’s resolve to protect investors, genuine landowners, and ensure that Ondo State remains a safe and attractive destination for development and economic growth. As the case against Oba Adewale Boboye continues, the people of Ondo State and the wider nation will be watching to see how the legal proceedings unfold. The message from the state government is clear: the fight against land grabbing is not a mere slogan, but a sustained and uncompromising campaign to restore the rule of law and protect the rights of all citizens.
