Children's Day— but in the quiet agrarian community of Ikhehe in Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State, there is little to celebrate. A 30-year-old man, Pere Odese, allegedly killed his own father, Friday Odese, following a dispute over food – only to be lynched by an angry mob as he tried to flee

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in the Ikhehe community of Ewato, within the Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The deceased father was identified as Friday Odese, a local farmer. The son who allegedly killed him was identified by multiple sources as Pere Odese, though some local reports also named him as Spiro Odese.

The tragic chain of events began when the son confronted his father, demanding food. In response, the elder Odese explained that there was nothing to eat in the house because he had been unable to access his farm in the nearby forest to harvest cassava. The reason he gave was the persistent presence of armed men and unknown gunmen who have taken over the forests in the area, making it impossible for farmers to work safely.

This explanation did not satisfy the son, who became irked and enraged. A heated quarrel broke out between the father and son. In a fit of anger, the younger Odese reportedly picked up a cutlass and launched a brutal attack on his own father, hacking him to death on the spot.

A female witness to the attack raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours. A good Samaritan who courageously attempted to intervene and rescue the elderly farmer was also attacked by the son with the same machete, sustaining severe injuries. He was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

As news of the patricide spread, an angry mob of youths in the community mobilized. They tracked down the suspect, apprehended him as he was attempting to flee the scene, and exacted swift jungle justice, lynching him and beating him to death. The initial violent outburst thus resulted in two deaths and one critically wounded resident.

When contacted by journalists, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated that the incident had not yet been formally reported to the police. According to the command, officers attached to the Ewohimi Division were yet to brief the command on the development.

As the corpses of the father and son were evacuated to a morgue, the agrarian community was left in a state of mourning and confusion, grappling with the shock of a family tragedy compounded by the grim reality of “jungle justice.” The incident serves as a stark reminder of the cascading effects of the nation’s insecurity and economic hardship, where the inability to access farmlands due to bandits and a lack of food at home can lead to such tragic, irreversible consequences.
