A Nigerian woman has been arrested after a viral video showed her smoking what appeared to be cannabis rolled in pages allegedly torn from a Bible, an act she defended as a form of prayer while appearing unbothered by the accusations against her. The footage, which circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, captured the woman dressed in a colorful outfit and a white hijab, holding what appeared to be a rolled substance while being questioned by a man behind the camera. When asked if she was smoking it, she replied, “Yes, to pray!” and added, “I am very proud of what I’m using.”

The man recording the incident claimed the woman had previously been taken in for treatment after authorities reportedly removed her two children from her custody over concerns about her mental and emotional condition. According to him, she had shown signs of improvement after undergoing rehabilitation and allegedly promised to stop smoking weed before being allowed to return home. However, he alleged that she recently relapsed and was again caught smoking cannabis wrapped in pages torn from the Bible. “She tears a portion of the Bible and wraps the weed with it. This is what she’s smoking,” the man said in the clip. He further alleged that the woman caused a disturbance near the entrance of a children’s school earlier in the day, prompting concerned individuals to intervene. “She has deteriorated seriously and has been causing nuisance,” he added.

The incident quickly sparked a heated online debate, with many users condemning the act as disrespectful to the Christian faith, while others pointed to the woman’s apparent mental health struggles and relapse as signs of deeper societal failures in addiction management and support systems. Religious groups and online commentators expressed outrage, though some argued that the matter reflected a personal psychological struggle rather than simple misconduct. Mental health advocates have noted that relapse among recovering drug users is common, especially when consistent treatment, monitoring and family support are lacking. The video also raised questions about the ethics of recording and mocking vulnerable individuals, with some commentators questioning whether enough support systems exist for women battling addiction while also caring for children. Community members in the area expressed concern over the alleged disturbance near the school premises, noting that such incidents near children inevitably raise fear regardless of the personal struggles behind them. As of the time of this report, no official statement had been issued by the police or the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) regarding the arrest. The woman’s identity and the exact location of the incident remain unclear. The video continues to circulate on social media platforms, drawing both condemnation and calls for greater compassion and investment in mental health and rehabilitation services.
