Two undergraduates have been killed and several others hospitalised following a suspected cult attack on an off-campus apartment in the Ede area of Osun State, in what police sources described as a revenge mission linked to an ongoing rivalry between two confraternities. The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, when a group of about six students were attacked in their residence by suspected cultists who forced their way into the apartment armed with dangerous weapons.

According to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attack stemmed from a lingering supremacy battle between cult groups in the area. “The attack occurred in the night. The students were in their room when some cultists who were on a revenge mission forced their way into the apartment and started attacking them with dangerous weapons. The students sustained varying degrees of injuries, and two later succumbed to their injuries,” the source disclosed. The injured victims were taken to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.

An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, alleged that the attack was carried out by members of the Aye confraternity, who reportedly tracked a Buccaneer member identified simply as Dara to the apartment. According to the platform, Dara, who held the position of first shipmate, was in the company of other officeholders, including the group’s “Big Eye,” at the time of the attack. “Aye, the hit squad tracked a Buccaneer named Dara to his house. Dara holds the position of first shipmate, and the first shipmate is always with the number one man (Big Eye). When they got there, both the first shipmate, the Big Eye, and other officeholders were in the house. They were seriously attacked,” the platform wrote in a statement. Naija Confra further claimed that the two deceased victims included the first shipmate and another person described as the “SJ,” while other members of the apartment were left in critical condition.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that a clash took place but stated that only one fatality had been officially recorded. “Suspected cultists had a clash on Tuesday, and one person was killed. Investigation is ongoing,” Ojelabi told reporters. The police spokesperson did not confirm the identity of the victims or the specific cult groups involved, but assured that the command was actively investigating the incident and would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

The killing of the two undergraduates in Ede has reignited concerns over the rising incidents of cult-related violence in Osun State, where tertiary institutions and their surrounding communities have become frequent flashpoints for clashes between rival confraternities. Earlier in March 2026, the state police command had arrested five suspected cultists involved in violent clashes within the Ilesa metropolis. In September 2025, six suspects were arrested in connection with a cult attack on a campus in the Iree area of the state.

Residents of the Ede area have expressed shock and fear following the incident, calling on security agencies to step up patrols and intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks. The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

As of the time of this report, the identities of the two deceased undergraduates have not been officially released, as the police continue to notify their families.
