A fatal lone accident along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway has claimed the lives of five persons, including two children, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The crash occurred around 11:12 a.m. on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at the Iyana Egbado village in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed the incident. The lone crash involved a white Mazda E2000 commercial passenger bus with registration number LAGOS KRD 809 XC, which was carrying a total of 20 passengers. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted into the bush and went up in flames.
FRSC spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, gave a detailed breakdown of the casualties. He stated that the passengers comprised six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child and two female children. Five persons were killed, including one adult male, two adult females, one male child and one female child. Ten persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while five persons escaped unhurt.
Officials attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speeding and overloading. Odunsi noted that the weather was cloudy at the time, and the road was paved, indicating that human factors were the primary cause of the disaster.
The FRSC stated that rescue operatives from the RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene at 11:20 a.m., just five minutes after receiving the report of the crash at 11:15 a.m.. The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital in Ifo and the Oreofe Specialist Hospital in Itori for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He urged motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, and all other forms of traffic violations, especially during the festive period, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.
