President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after spending the Sallah break in Lagos, where he combined Eid-el-Kabir festivities with a packed schedule of political consultations, official engagements and diplomatic meetings. The President arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at exactly 5:17 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, according to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. His aircraft, an Airbus A330, touched down to a reception that included the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Inspector‑General of Police, Tunji Disu; and other senior government officials.
During the holiday period, Tinubu held a series of traditional Sallah homage meetings at his Lagos residence, receiving a steady stream of political dignitaries and party leaders. Vice President Kashim Shettima led the first delegation, followed by the leadership of the Senate under Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who brought members of the Senate leadership. The President also received members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by its Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. In separate engagements, APC stakeholders from Oyo State, including the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, as well as APC candidates for the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly from Lagos State, also paid homage to the President.
Beyond political meetings, Tinubu’s stay in Lagos was marked by official engagements tied to national security and international diplomacy. On Monday, 1 June 2026, the President attended the International Fleet Review at the Eko Atlantic City Waterfront, held as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary. As the reviewing officer, he commissioned three naval vessels – NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara – a move aimed at strengthening maritime security and enhancing the operational capabilities of the Navy. The President also held bilateral talks with the newly inaugurated President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, in a meeting described as reinforcing the longstanding ties of friendship, regional cooperation, and economic partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
The Sallah break came on the heels of the President’s participation in the All Progressives Congress (APC) nationwide primaries, which concluded on 23 May 2026. Tinubu personally cast his ballot at his Ward L2 polling unit in Ikoyi‑Obalende, Lagos, and was subsequently declared the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election after polling 10,999,162 votes across the country’s 8,809 wards. His sole challenger, Stanley Osifo, scored 16,503 votes. The primaries also produced candidates for governorship, National Assembly and state House of Assembly positions across the federation.
Following his return to the Federal Capital Territory, President Tinubu is expected to resume full official duties and continue consultations on key national matters. His schedule in the coming days includes a planned address to a joint session of the National Assembly on 12 June 2026 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary. That event will be followed by a presidential broadcast and a Democracy Day Gala Night. The President is also expected to lead a nationwide commissioning spree of federal projects in the FCT, announced by Minister Nyesom Wike to mark Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.
With the 2027 election cycle already under way, Tinubu’s Sallah engagements underscored his dual role as both head of state and leader of the ruling party. His return to Abuja signals a resumption of regular governance activities after a brief but highly active holiday period that combined tradition, politics, diplomacy and national security.
