The Delta State Police Command has summoned human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu for questioning over his role in circulating a viral video that showed an unarmed suspect, Oghenemine Ogidi, being fatally shot by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State. The invitation, dated 1 June 2026, cited allegations of conspiracy, attempted murder, incitement to terrorism, communal war and obstruction. The letter, signed by ACP Adigwe on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), directed Gwamnishu to appear at the State CID in Asaba on 4 June 2026. However, the activist voluntarily honoured the invitation two days early, arriving at the Delta State Police Command Headquarters in Asaba on 2 June.
In a video shared on his social media handle, Gwamnishu, who is the Director General of the Behind Bars Human Rights and Safe City Volunteer Foundation, insisted that he had committed no offence. “My only sin is posting Oghenemine’s case, which deserved public awareness to end police brutality. That when a suspect is already arrested, tied, pleading and already cooperating with you, why kill him?” he asked. He dismissed the allegations as frivolous and called for the prosecution of anyone who supplied false information to the police. “This petition is frivolous, and anybody who wrote it must be brought to book for false information to the police,” he stated. Gwamnishu also recalled that he had been detained for four years by the police in 2011 and denied any involvement in the recent transfer of over 1,000 police officers from the Delta State Command, which he said had been wrongly attributed to him.
The incident that sparked the controversy occurred on 26 April 2026, when ASP Nuhu Usman and a team of officers attached to the Effurun Area Command intercepted Oghenemine Ogidi at a motor park. A parcel believed to contain a Beretta pistol and ammunition was found, and Ogidi was handcuffed. A video that later went viral showed the handcuffed suspect pleading for his life and assuring the officers that he would cooperate, before Usman discharged his firearm at close range, killing him. The killing triggered nationwide outrage and forced the police to order the dismissal and prosecution of the officers involved. The five suspects, including Usman, were arraigned before High Court 5 in Asaba and remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre pending trial.
The Delta State Police Command has not officially commented on the invitation or the allegations against Gwamnishu. The activist has called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to grant him an audience, alleging that there is a plot to falsely implicate him. “I am not taking the work of the police or the military. I am only assisting,” he said, while maintaining that he does not own a gun and only uses social media to expose criminal activities and security concerns in Delta State.
