The Yobe State Police Command has uncovered an illegal firearms fabrication workshop in the Tasha Adua area of Potiskum Local Government Area, arresting seven suspects and seizing a significant cache of weapons and manufacturing equipment during a coordinated raid on a blacksmith workshop. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., followed credible intelligence reports that some blacksmiths along Danchuwa Road in Potiskum were secretly producing Dane guns and other firearms.
Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the Potiskum Area Command, in collaboration with officers from the Divisional Police Headquarters, mobilised to the blacksmith workshop at Tasha Adua. During the raid, police arrested seven suspects and recovered a range of exhibits, including two fabricated pistols, twenty‑four muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable Dane guns, one filing machine, and one sharp cutlass.
In a crime bulletin issued by the command, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the breakthrough. “The Yobe State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained efforts to combat crime and criminality across the state,” the statement said. According to Abdulkarim, the raid was carried out after intelligence revealed that certain blacksmiths were engaged in the illegal fabrication of firearms.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are undergoing thorough investigations. Police say the probe will focus on identifying their collaborators, possible buyers, and the intended use of the fabricated weapons. The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, has directed officers handling the case to intensify investigations, identify other illegal firearms fabrication centres within the area, and assess the level of security threat posed by such criminal activities.
The command also warned members of the public not to allow their premises or facilities to be used for unlawful activities, including the fabrication of dangerous weapons. “Residents are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies,” SP Abdulkarim added.
The raid is part of a broader push by the Nigerian Police Force to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, which have fuelled banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the North‑East. The discovery of a functional weapons workshop in Potiskum highlights the growing challenge of local gun manufacturing, which criminal networks increasingly rely on as a cheaper and more accessible alternative to smuggled arms.
As of Wednesday, 3 June 2026, the seven suspects remain in custody, and no court date has been announced. Investigations are ongoing.
