IBADAN, Nigeria — The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed a widely circulated publication claiming to contain detailed information about the recent kidnapping incident in Ahoro-Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area, describing the report as misleading, speculative, and unauthorized.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command said it had observed with serious concern the spread of information allegedly detailing operational findings, identities of suspects, communication interceptions, and financial transactions purportedly linked to the ongoing investigation.
According to the police, the publication did not originate from the Command or any authorized security agency involved in the investigation. Authorities maintained that several of the claims contained in the report were inaccurate and should not be regarded as official information.
The Command stressed that investigations into the abduction remain active and highly sensitive, noting that operational details are being handled through intelligence-driven processes aimed at ensuring the successful arrest and prosecution of all those involved.
Police authorities explained that information relating to suspects, investigative leads, communication records, and financial intelligence is protected during ongoing investigations to prevent compromising security operations and to safeguard efforts aimed at apprehending perpetrators.
The statement warned that the dissemination of unverified information could mislead the public, create unnecessary panic, and potentially interfere with ongoing security activities.
"The Command therefore cautions members of the public, bloggers, and online publishers against the dissemination of unverified, exaggerated, or operationally sensitive information capable of misleading the public, causing panic, or undermining active security operations," the statement said.
The Police Command further warned that it would not hesitate to take legal action against individuals or groups found deliberately spreading false information or attempting to obstruct ongoing investigations.
The warning comes amid increasing public attention on the kidnapping incident and the wider challenge of insecurity confronting several communities across Nigeria. Security agencies have consistently appealed to citizens to avoid sharing unverified reports capable of undermining law enforcement efforts.
Reassuring residents of its commitment to public safety, the Oyo State Police Command stated that efforts are ongoing to identify, track, and arrest all persons connected with the Oriire abduction case.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information through established channels.
Members of the public were advised to obtain updates on the investigation exclusively through official communications issued by the Police Command and other authorized security authorities.
The statement was signed by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Oyo State Police Command on June 5, 2026.
