The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has issued a directive ordering a significant reinforcement of security around all schools, correctional centres, churches and mosques across the state. The directive was issued during a high‑level strategic meeting with senior officers of the command on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, and was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
Addressing members of the command management team, Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments, CP Oyeniyi gave a marching order that all Area Commanders and DPOs must immediately identify every school, correctional facility, church and mosque within their respective jurisdictions. He mandated them to ensure maximum security coverage, including regular patrols and routine site visits, to proactively prevent criminal activities and safeguard vulnerable communities.
“Area Commanders and DPOs must locate schools, churches, mosques, and correctional centres in their areas and ensure that maximum security is provided, and maintain regular visits,” CP Oyeniyi was quoted as saying in the statement.
The police commissioner also expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of murder and violent crimes in the state. He tasked DPOs with launching community sensitisation campaigns aimed at educating residents on peaceful conflict resolution and enhancing security awareness. He urged police leadership to strengthen collaboration with community heads and other critical stakeholders to foster collective vigilance.
In addition to site security, CP Oyeniyi stressed the importance of operational discipline and professionalism. He warned that supervising officers would be held vicariously liable for any acts of professional misconduct or operational lapses by personnel under their watch. All officers were directed to strictly adhere to the Nigeria Police Force guidelines, maintain high dressing standards, and display their official name tags while on duty. CP Oyeniyi made it clear that defaulters would face swift disciplinary sanctions.
The directive comes amid a surge in violent attacks and homicides across the state, and is part of ongoing efforts by the Delta State Police Command to strengthen internal discipline, enhance community policing, and improve public safety. The command has assured residents that it remains fully committed to protecting lives and property, and has called on citizens to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
