Troops under the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY), have arrested a suspected arms courier and recovered a large cache of ammunition concealed in a civilian vehicle during a checkpoint operation in Zamfara State.

The operation was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026, by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA. According to the statement, troops attached to Sector 2 OPFY intercepted a vehicle at a military checkpoint in Kaura while it was travelling towards Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on June 5, 2026.

During the search, troops reportedly discovered a locally fabricated pistol, a magazine, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition concealed inside a sack of millet being transported in the vehicle. The recovered items were immediately secured by the troops as part of ongoing counter-smuggling and anti-insurgency operations in the region.

Following preliminary investigation, the exhibits were linked to a 42-year-old suspect identified as Mustapha Abubakar, who was arrested at the scene. The military statement alleged that the suspect is involved in the illegal movement of arms and ammunition believed to be destined for terrorist elements operating within the North West region.

According to the statement, the suspect was en route to deliver the concealed weapons to an identified accomplice when he was intercepted by troops conducting routine security checks at the checkpoint. The arrest forms part of broader military efforts aimed at disrupting logistics networks supporting armed groups operating across Zamfara and surrounding states.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA, a Joint Task Force initiative covering parts of Nigeria’s North West, has been engaged in sustained counter-terrorism and counter-banditry operations targeting armed groups responsible for attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling across the region. Military authorities have continued to intensify patrols, checkpoint operations, and intelligence-led interventions aimed at restricting the movement of weapons and illicit supplies.

The latest interception also comes amid ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State and neighbouring areas, where armed groups have been linked to repeated incidents of violence, rural raids, and illegal arms trafficking. Security forces have repeatedly stated that disrupting supply chains remains a key priority in weakening the operational capacity of such groups.

The statement further noted that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing investigation, while recovered items have been secured as exhibits for further analysis and possible prosecution under applicable laws.

Military authorities have not released additional details regarding the identity of the alleged accomplice or the intended destination of the weapons. No official court proceedings have been announced at the time of reporting.

The Joint Task Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining pressure on armed groups and criminal networks operating in the North West, urging members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence to support ongoing security operations.
