A woman accused of child theft was brutally killed and set ablaze by an angry mob in Maraban Jos, a suburb of Kaduna State, in a disturbing case of jungle justice that has sparked outrage across the state.
The tragic incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. According to a statement issued in Kaduna by the spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, the woman was attacked by residents over allegations of child theft, although no evidence was presented to support the claim.
Police said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call and swiftly deployed officers to the scene. The officers successfully rescued the woman from the mob and moved her to the police station for protection and further investigation.
However, the situation escalated when hundreds of angry residents reportedly stormed the police station, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly dragged the woman out of custody, killed her, and set her body ablaze.
The Kaduna State Police Command described the act as barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law. Authorities confirmed that the victim was a native of Maraban Jos.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Rabiu Muhammad, strongly condemned the mob action, warning that the command would not tolerate jungle justice, mob violence, or attacks on police formations and personnel. He stressed that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands regardless of the allegations against a suspect.
Police confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the killing, while a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend other perpetrators involved in the attack.
A full-scale investigation has been launched, and authorities assured the public that all culprits would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing trend of mob violence in Nigeria, where individuals accused of crimes are often attacked before proper investigations are carried out.
Security agencies have urged citizens to report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities and allow due legal process rather than resorting to violence.
