Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, following his victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, describing the outcome as a significant development in the state’s political landscape.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ikeje Asogwa winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election on Sunday, June 21, 2026, after the poll held on Saturday across Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, and Udenu Local Government Areas of Enugu State.

The election was conducted to fill the vacant senatorial seat previously occupied by Labour Party Senator Okey Ezea, who died after an illness in November 2025.

INEC Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe, announced the final result at the commission’s office, declaring that Asogwa secured 162,360 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 9,299 votes.

Following the announcement, Governor Mbah issued a congratulatory message to Asogwa, describing the result as a victory that reflected the decision of voters in the senatorial district.

Mbah said the outcome represented what he described as a “statement victory” for both his administration and the APC, noting that the people of the district had chosen their preferred candidate.

The governor stated that the election result showed strong support for APC within Enugu State and described it as evidence of the party’s growing influence in the state’s political environment.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of Enugu State, I congratulate Chief Ikeje Asogwa on this resounding victory,” Mbah said.

He added that the result demonstrated the confidence voters placed in Asogwa and his ability to represent the senatorial district at the National Assembly.

The governor described Asogwa as someone who has contributed to public service and said his election would strengthen cooperation between the state government and federal institutions.

Mbah said effective representation at the federal level could support stronger collaboration between Enugu State and the Federal Government.

He expressed confidence that the senator-elect would contribute to attracting development opportunities and projects to the district.

The Enugu North Senatorial District covers six local government areas, making the by-election an important political contest for communities across the zone.

The election followed months of preparation by political parties and electoral officials after the seat became vacant due to the passing of the former senator.

The result has now cleared the way for Asogwa to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the Senate following the completion of the electoral process.

Political stakeholders in the state have continued to react to the outcome, with attention now turning to the responsibilities awaiting the newly elected senator.

Asogwa’s victory marks the latest development in Enugu’s political affairs, with expectations that the senator-elect will begin preparations to assume his legislative duties.
