At least 18 people have been killed after armed attackers invaded Kawel and Kopkon communities in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, with security forces launching operations to track down those responsible for the attack.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Kawel and Kopkon communities of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, according to security sources cited by counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama. The report stated that troops under Sector 5 of Operation Enduring Peace were deployed after receiving distress calls from the affected areas.

According to the report, the attackers entered the communities during the early morning hours and carried out an assault that resulted in the deaths of several residents.

Security sources said troops received information about the attack at about 1:20 a.m. and moved toward the affected communities in response to the emergency situation.

The attackers reportedly opened fire in Kawel and Kopkon villages before leaving the area before security personnel arrived.

When troops reached the communities, they discovered casualties from the attack. Reports indicated that 12 bodies were found in Kawel village while six bodies were recovered from Kopkon village.

The discovery brought the total number of confirmed fatalities from the attack to 18 people, according to the information provided by security sources.

Following the discovery of the victims, troops under Operation Enduring Peace began operations aimed at locating the attackers and preventing further attacks in surrounding communities.

Security personnel have continued patrols and search activities across areas linked to the incident as efforts continue to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The attack has added to existing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, particularly communities in Bokkos and neighbouring areas that have experienced repeated violence.

Residents in affected communities have continued to face security challenges involving attacks, displacement, and loss of property, creating difficulties for families living in rural settlements.

The latest incident has again drawn attention to the security situation in Plateau State, where authorities have maintained deployments aimed at protecting vulnerable communities.

Operation Enduring Peace was established to improve security operations and strengthen efforts against violent attacks in Plateau and other affected areas.

Security sources said the military operation following the latest attack is ongoing, with troops working to track the fleeing attackers and restore calm in the affected communities.

Community members are awaiting further updates from authorities while security personnel continue their operations in the area.

The Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, had not provided a public response at the time of the report.

The incident has increased calls for continued security intervention and protection of communities affected by recurring violence in parts of northern Nigeria.
