President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the chairman of the governing board of the National Universities Commission (NUC), as part of efforts to strengthen leadership and administration within Nigeria’s university system.

The appointment was announced by the Presidency on Monday, June 22, 2026, in Abuja, with Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe named to lead the governing board of the National Universities Commission, the regulatory body responsible for overseeing standards and development in Nigerian universities.

Professor Ogundipe, a renowned academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, brings years of experience in university administration, research, and higher education management to the new role.

The NUC serves as the main regulatory agency responsible for coordinating university education in Nigeria, including accreditation of academic programmes, quality assurance, and policy implementation across public and private universities.

His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria’s higher education sector continues to face discussions around funding, infrastructure development, academic standards, research capacity and the need for stronger institutional governance.

As chairman of the governing board, Ogundipe is expected to provide strategic direction and support policies aimed at improving the effectiveness of the commission and strengthening the country’s university system.

During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Ogundipe was involved in various academic and administrative reforms aimed at improving research, innovation and institutional development.

The former university administrator has also contributed to discussions on improving the quality of education in Nigeria, particularly through stronger collaboration between universities, government agencies and industry.

The National Universities Commission plays a key role in ensuring that universities operate within approved standards and that graduates receive quality academic training.

The appointment is part of the federal government’s broader approach to repositioning key institutions through the selection of experienced professionals to leadership positions.

The Presidency has maintained that appointments to strategic agencies are aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening institutions and supporting national development objectives.

Ogundipe’s selection is expected to attract attention within the academic community, given his background in university leadership and his previous experience managing one of Nigeria’s largest higher institutions.

The new chairman will work alongside members of the NUC governing board and other stakeholders responsible for shaping policies affecting universities across the country.

Nigeria’s university sector has expanded significantly over the years, with the number of institutions increasing across federal, state and private ownership categories.

However, challenges including inadequate infrastructure, funding gaps, academic staff capacity and research limitations remain issues requiring continued attention from policymakers.

Stakeholders in the education sector have often called for stronger regulatory coordination and improved partnerships to ensure Nigerian universities meet global academic standards.

The appointment of Professor Ogundipe is therefore expected to place renewed focus on the role of the NUC in maintaining quality assurance and supporting sustainable growth in higher education.

The new chairman’s experience in university administration will be closely watched as the commission continues its responsibilities in guiding Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
