The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed I-Fitness Gym located at Jakande Roundabout, Lekki Peninsula, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, for the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into public drains via a pipe, thereby causing public nuisance, environmental pollution, and endangering human health. The enforcement action was carried out on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, following a series of complaints from residents and environmental monitoring conducted by the agency.
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Government, the facility was found to have connected a pipe that channelled untreated sewage directly into the public drainage system, in clear violation of the state's environmental regulations. The government reiterated the need for the public to adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices, warning that any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations would be meted out with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws.
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, which is responsible for regulating wastewater and sewage management across the state, said the sealing of the gymnasium was part of a broader enforcement campaign aimed at curbing indiscriminate sewage disposal and protecting public health. “The Lagos State Government will not tolerate actions that endanger the environment and the well-being of its citizens,” the statement read. “All property owners, businesses and individuals are urged to ensure that their wastewater is properly channelled and treated in accordance with approved standards”.
The sealing of the gym has drawn attention to the challenges posed by improper sewage disposal in Lagos, where rapid urbanisation and inadequate infrastructure have led to frequent incidents of environmental pollution. Authorities have warned that offenders risk prosecution, fines and possible imprisonment if found guilty of violating the state’s environmental laws.
The Lagos State Government has urged members of the public to report any suspected cases of indiscriminate sewage discharge or other environmental violations to the appropriate agencies for prompt action. The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment for all residents of Lagos State.
