The Ogun State Police Command has recorded a major victory in its ongoing war against violent crime, neutralising two suspected kidnappers and recovering a cash sum of N2.2 million believed to be ransom proceeds, alongside a firearm and other exhibits. The operation, carried out by the command's Anti-Kidnapping Unit, followed the safe release of an abducted victim who had been held captive for a week. The breakthrough, announced on Wednesday by the command's spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in dismantling criminal networks terrorising communities across the state.
The victim, a woman whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was abducted on June 11, 2026, at Ogbe Village in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. Upon receiving the report, the command immediately activated its Anti-Kidnapping Unit, deploying tactical teams and intelligence assets to secure her release and track down the perpetrators. Through sustained surveillance and relentless operational pressure, the operatives forced the gang to release the victim unharmed on June 18, 2026. However, the police did not stop at the rescue. Determined to ensure that those responsible did not evade justice, the operatives intensified follow-up operations and embarked on a coordinated manhunt for the suspects.
Acting on credible intelligence, the police team traced members of the kidnapping syndicate to their hideout within the state. On sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate attempt to resist arrest and escape. The operatives responded professionally, engaging the criminals in a fierce gun duel during which two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralised. Other members of the gang, however, managed to flee the scene with gunshot injuries. A search conducted on one of the neutralised suspects led to the recovery of a single-barrel gun, while further examination of the scene yielded one expended cartridge, a mobile phone, and a cash sum of Two Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N2,200,000), reasonably suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.
The command has since intensified efforts to track down and apprehend the fleeing gang members, while investigations into the full extent of the syndicate's criminal enterprise continue. Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its gallantry, professionalism, courage, and operational effectiveness. He said the success of the operation reinforces the command's resolve to relentlessly pursue kidnappers and other violent criminals wherever they may seek refuge. Ojajuni reiterated that Ogun State will remain hostile terrain for criminal elements and assured residents that the command will continue to deploy intelligence-led policing, robust tactical operations, and strategic partnerships with communities to protect lives and property.
The commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely, useful, and credible information to security agencies to support efforts to curb criminality across the state. This latest operation is part of a broader crackdown by the Ogun State Police Command, which has recorded several successes against kidnapping syndicates in recent weeks. The command's proactive stance has been widely praised by residents and stakeholders, who have called for sustained efforts to ensure the safety and security of communities in the state. For now, the message from the Ogun State Police Command is clear: the era of impunity for kidnappers is over, and those who dare to operate within the state will face the full force of the law.
