The Lagos State Police Command has officially ruled out terrorism, sabotage, or the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the explosion that occurred in the Mushin area of Lagos, confirming that the incident was caused by a catastrophic mechanical failure of a pressurised component outside a vehicle. The clarification, contained in a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, 2026, by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, brings an end to days of speculation and widespread anxiety that had gripped residents and business owners in the busy commercial district.

The explosion occurred on Monday, June 22, 2026, at about 22 Wey Street in the bustling Shoe Materials Market area of Oke Mushin. The blast shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of a vehicle and caused minor injuries to the occupant, triggering immediate fears of a bomb attack or terrorist activity in the densely populated neighbourhood. However, following a thorough investigation, the police have now classified the incident as a "Mechanical Explosion."

According to the statement, technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks. "Investigation established that the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component outside the vehicle," the statement read. "This failure generated a sudden release of energy which caused the shattering of the vehicle's front passenger side glass panels and resulted in minor injuries to the occupant."

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, who addressed the press at the Command Headquarters on Thursday, dismissed fears that the explosion was caused by an IED, terrorism, or any other criminal activity. He assured residents that there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage, or any threat to public safety. "Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion," Fatai stated.

The police command urged members of the public to remain calm and disregard any speculative reports suggesting that the blast was a terrorist attack. The command also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and businesses in Lagos State, while commending the public for their vigilance and cooperation during the investigation.

The Mushin explosion had initially caused panic in the area, with many residents and traders fearing that it might be a sign of escalating insecurity in the state. However, the police clarification has brought relief to the community, confirming that the incident was an isolated mechanical failure rather than a deliberate act of violence. The Lagos State Police Command continues to monitor the situation and has assured the public of its readiness to respond to any security concerns.
