Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested three transnational drug traffickers and intercepted a massive consignment of 558,900 pills of Tramadol 250mg concealed in a specially fabricated compartment of a truck travelling from Togo through the Benin Republic into Nigeria, the agency announced on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The Director of Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, disclosed in a statement that the suspects — two nationals of the Benin Republic and one Nigerian — were arrested on June 21, 2026, at the Mile 2 Bridge in Lagos. The truck, which was conveying the illicit drug consignment from Togo through the Benin Republic, was intercepted following credible intelligence.
According to Babafemi, a thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 558,900 pills of Tramadol 250mg, concealed in a fabricated compartment of the truck. The 250mg dosage far exceeds Nigeria's approved medical limit of 100mg per dose, making the consignment a significant public health and security threat. The pills were hidden in a specially fabricated iron compartment beneath the truck's belly, a method allegedly designed to evade border checks.
The NDLEA spokesperson described those behind the operation as "merchants of death," warning that the trafficking of large quantities of high-strength tramadol poses a serious threat to public health and national security. He noted that the confiscated pills will undergo forensic testing, and the agency will proceed with investigations to trace the supply chain and those responsible for the smuggling.
The seizure is part of a broader crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking networks. In a separate operation, the NDLEA arrested two suspects along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday, June 26, 2026, while transporting 118 kilograms of skunk concealed among legitimate goods in a truck heading from Ebute Ero on Lagos Island to Onitsha, Anambra State. Similarly, operatives of the agency's Special Operations Unit arrested a 57-year-old suspect at a motor park in Iddo, Lagos, on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with 209.50 kilograms of Scottish Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, allegedly being transported to Enugu State.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives arrested two women on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 15 Olumokun Street, Amukoko, Lagos, recovering 28.8 kilograms of skunk. Investigations revealed that the principal suspect used the residence as a storage point for illicit drugs before distributing them to customers through an accomplice.
Beyond enforcement operations, the NDLEA said it continued its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign, conducting sensitisation programmes in schools, workplaces, worship centres and communities. During the past week, anti-drug awareness lectures were delivered to students and staff of Government Girls Science Secondary School, Damaturu, Yobe State; Adesalu Primary School, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos; Government Girls Secondary School, Badawa, Kano State; School of Science and Islamic Studies, Ankpa, Kogi; and Community Secondary School, Ezimo, Udenu LGA, Enugu State, among others.
NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, commended the officers and men involved in the operations, noting their drug supply reduction efforts balanced with WADA sensitisation activities, while charging them and their compatriots across the country not to rest on their oars.
The arrest of the three transnational traffickers and the seizure of the 558,900 tramadol pills represent a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria. As investigations continue, the NDLEA has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing illicit substances from reaching communities across the country.
