A woman identified as the wife of an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighter has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, clutching her two-month-old baby, in a dramatic turn that exposes the crumbling morale and worsening humanitarian conditions inside terrorist enclaves across the North-East.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, that the woman, identified as Falmata Bakwai, surrendered to troops of the 19 Brigade at Cross Kauwa at about 10:15 a.m. on June 26, 2026.

During a preliminary debriefing, Bakwai reportedly told troops that she escaped from the ISWAP enclave at Dogon Chuku while her husband and other fighters were away from the camp. She attributed her decision to flee to worsening living conditions within the terrorist enclave, including acute shortages of food and other essential supplies.

According to the sources, she said the humanitarian situation in the camp had deteriorated drastically due to sustained military offensives and aerial bombardments targeting terrorist hideouts across the North-East. "She attributed the worsening humanitarian conditions in the camp to sustained military strangulation operations and aerial bombardments targeting terrorist hideouts," a security analyst posted on X.

The surrender of an ISWAP fighter's wife, especially one carrying a newborn, is a significant indicator of the growing pressure on terrorist enclaves as a result of coordinated ground and air operations in the region. The military's relentless campaign, which includes cutting off supply routes and conducting precision strikes, is evidently taking a toll on the fighters' families, forcing them to abandon the very camps they once called home.

Bakwai's escape comes just a week after troops of Operation Hadin Kai rescued 53 hostages and recovered eight vehicles after dismantling an ISWAP roadblock along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Biu LGA. That operation, carried out on June 24, 2026, by troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion, demonstrated the military's growing capacity to use surveillance and intelligence to dismantle insurgent roadblocks and rescue civilians.

Bakwai and her infant have since been quarantined and are receiving medical care in accordance with established operational procedures. Military authorities said debriefing is ongoing, while arrangements are being made to transfer her to the Headquarters of Sector 3, Operation Hadin Kai/Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), for further investigation and profiling.

The military noted that the surrender reflects the sustained pressure being exerted on terrorist enclaves through coordinated ground and air operations across Nigeria's North-East. As the military continues to tighten the noose around ISWAP and Boko Haram strongholds, the surrender of Bakwai may not be an isolated incident. It serves as a powerful testament that even the most hardened terrorist groups are vulnerable when their supply lines are severed and their sanctuaries are pounded from the air.
