Two soldiers were killed and three others injured after troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division came under a coordinated terrorist ambush while responding to a security threat in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, security sources have confirmed.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, when troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Tidibale responded to distress calls reporting a terrorist attack on Tagirke village. According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the soldiers engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat from the village.

However, as the troops withdrew from the area, the fleeing terrorists launched a second attack from a pre-positioned ambush along the route. During the ambush, one of the military gun trucks struck an improvised explosive device (IED), leading to the casualties among the troops. Two soldiers were confirmed killed in action, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The bodies of the slain soldiers were evacuated to the mortuary of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto. The injured personnel were transported to the 8 Division Medical Services and Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The damaged gun truck was later recovered and towed back to the Forward Operating Base in Tidibale.

Military sources said troops have intensified operations in the area, launching a manhunt to track down the assailants, recover missing weapons, and sustain offensive operations against terrorist elements in the region. The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in Sokoto State and the broader North-West, where armed groups have continued to target security forces and rural communities despite ongoing military operations.
