Five suspected vandals were arrested on Thursday while attempting to dismantle a high-tension power tower at the Swali–Obogoro (Ekoli) Bridge in Obogoro, Bayelsa State, in a swift operation that underscores the growing role of community vigilance in protecting critical national infrastructure.
The suspects were reportedly caught in the act by members of the Obogoro Community Vigilante after they were observed climbing the concrete structure and removing parts of the electricity infrastructure. Some members of the syndicate managed to escape, but five were apprehended at the scene. The arrested suspects have since been handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution, according to multiple reports.
The Ekoli Bridge power tower is a vital component of the electricity transmission network serving parts of Bayelsa State. Acts of vandalism on such infrastructure have repeatedly plunged communities into prolonged darkness, disrupted economic activities, and incurred huge costs for repairs and replacement. The timely intervention by the Obogoro Community Vigilante prevented what could have been another major outage.
The incident is part of a growing trend of infrastructure vandalism across Nigeria, where critical power installations are frequently targeted by criminal syndicates who sell the stolen materials. Security agencies and community-based groups have continued to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering to curb the menace. The Bayelsa State Police Command is expected to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that the suspects are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
