A wave of terror has gripped the Oghara Kingdom in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State following a series of brutal kidnappings in which victims were reportedly murdered even after their families paid ransoms, an escalating crisis that has left residents living in constant fear and forced a civil advocacy group to issue an urgent plea for government intervention.
The Oghara Study Group (OSG), a civic advocacy organisation, confirmed the incidents during a press conference in Warri on Thursday, July 2, 2026, detailing a pattern of violence that has transformed what was once regarded as one of Delta State's most peaceful communities into a hotspot for organised criminal violence. Addressing journalists on behalf of the group, co-conveners Rev. David Ugolor and Prof. Ogheneruonah Eghweree lamented that the security situation in Oghara had worsened significantly in recent times, with victims increasingly being murdered even after ransom payments, leaving poor families helpless and devastated.
The group's statement came in the wake of two separate incidents that have heightened anxiety across the kingdom. In the first, a man was abducted alongside his wife in Oghara Kingdom. According to reports, the wife later managed to escape captivity, but her husband was killed despite the payment of a ransom. The second incident involved a farmer named Vincent Adojor, who was ambushed while working on his farm with his family at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026. The attackers allegedly murdered Adojor before whisking away his wife and child into a nearby forest. As of the time of this report, the deceased's body had been deposited at a morgue in Oghara, while the whereabouts of his wife and child remained unknown.
The attack on Vincent Adojor and his family is a chilling illustration of the escalating insecurity in the region. According to multiple reports, Adojor was working on his farm with his wife and child when suspected kidnappers ambushed them. The assailants brutally murdered the farmer before abducting his wife and child, leaving the community in shock and mourning. Residents alleged that the attackers operated with impunity, disappearing into a nearby forest with their captives. The incident has thrown the Oghara community into mourning, with family members and residents expressing shock and concern over the worsening security situation.
The Oghara Study Group described the incidents as evidence of a deeply disturbing deterioration in public safety. In its statement, the group said that the tragedy has left families devastated, heightened fear among residents, and underscored the urgent need for decisive government action. According to the OSG, Oghara Kingdom, once known for its peaceful and hospitable environment, is increasingly becoming a hotspot for kidnappings, violent attacks, armed robbery, banditry, and senseless killings. The group noted that farmers are abandoning their farmlands because of insecurity, businesses now operate under persistent threats, while many families have significantly restricted their movements out of fear of being attacked or kidnapped.
The group called on the Federal Government, the Delta State Government, and the Ethiope West Local Government Council to urgently intervene. It specifically urged authorities to deploy additional police personnel and other security assets to secure Oghara and the Warri–Sapele corridor, launch sustained operations to dismantle criminal hideouts, intensify intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration, increase patrols along roads, rural communities, farmlands, and waterways, and establish rapid-response mechanisms for prompt intervention. The OSG also called for a thorough investigation into recent killings and kidnappings, with the outcome made public, and advocated for the formal integration of community vigilante groups into the state's security framework.
The latest incidents are part of a broader pattern of violence that has plagued Oghara Kingdom over the past year. According to the OSG, documented cases over the past several years reveal an alarming pattern of armed banditry, kidnapping-for-ransom, cult-related killings, ritual murders, attacks on tertiary institutions, and violent crimes along the Warri-Sapele corridor. Verified incidents between July 2025 and June 2026 showed repeated kidnappings, killings and failed rescue efforts, with several victims allegedly murdered despite ransom payments while others died before security operatives could rescue them. The group lamented that many poor families are unable to raise the huge ransom demands imposed by kidnappers, leaving them helpless while victims are either killed or remain in captivity.
Oghara Kingdom, described as the historic "Gateway to Urhoboland," is home to major institutions including the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Western Delta University and several oil-producing companies. The group warned that persistent insecurity now threatens lives, investments, education, agriculture and economic activities in the area.
The Oghara Study Group extended its condolences to the family of the slain man and to his wife, who endured abduction and the loss of her husband, saying that no family should ever have to experience such unimaginable cruelty. The group also condemned the activities of criminal gangs terrorising communities across Oghara Kingdom, insisting that criminality should never be justified on the basis of ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, or origin. The group cautioned residents against mob justice, ethnic profiling, vigilantism, or reprisals against innocent persons, emphasising that criminals must be identified, arrested, investigated, prosecuted, and made to face the full weight of the law. As the search for the abducted wife and child continues, the people of Oghara Kingdom remain on edge, hoping that the government will finally take decisive action to end the cycle of violence that has turned their once-peaceful community into a theatre of terror.
