Kano, Nigeria – July 4, 2026 – Armed bandits have attacked Kutama community in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, killing one resident identified as Muzakkir and rustling several cattle in the latest assault to hit communities along the state's border with Katsina.

The attack occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed the village, opened fire on residents and carted away livestock after overpowering local resistance. Community sources said Muzakkir was shot dead during the raid, while many villagers fled into surrounding bushes to escape the attackers.

Residents said the assailants operated for several minutes before escaping with an unspecified number of cattle, leaving fear and panic in their wake. The stolen livestock are believed to be the primary source of livelihood for many families in the agrarian community.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over the growing insecurity in Gwarzo Local Government Area, where communities bordering Katsina State have repeatedly come under attacks by armed bandits involved in killings, kidnappings and cattle rustling.

Although security operatives were alerted to the incident, there was no immediate confirmation of any arrest or recovery of the stolen cattle. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to track down the attackers and restore calm in the affected community.

The attack comes less than two months after suspected bandits invaded Lakwaya, another community in Gwarzo Local Government Area, killing two people, injuring several others and rustling large numbers of cattle despite the intervention of security personnel.

The recurring attacks have heightened fears among residents of border communities, many of whom depend on farming and livestock rearing for their survival. Community leaders have repeatedly appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen military presence and improve surveillance along the Kano–Katsina border to prevent further incursions by armed groups.

Security analysts say the porous border between Kano and neighbouring Katsina State has continued to expose rural communities to attacks by criminal gangs who move across state boundaries to launch raids before retreating into forest hideouts. They argue that sustained intelligence-led operations and closer collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups are essential to curbing the violence.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement on the latest attack, while residents continue to mourn the death of Muzakkir and count the losses caused by the rustling of their cattle. The incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks that have fuelled insecurity across north-west Nigeria in recent months.
