Osogbo, Osun State – July 4, 2026 – Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has disclosed that the Osun State Commissioner of Police informed him that some criminal suspects being sought by the police were allegedly hiding inside the Osun State Government House, a claim he raised directly with Governor Ademola Adeleke during a security meeting in Osogbo.

The disclosure was made on Friday, July 3, 2026, during the Inspector-General's visit to the Osun State Government House amid rising political tension and security concerns ahead of the state's governorship election. Speaking during the meeting, Disu said he had received complaints from different quarters regarding security developments in the state and decided to address the issues directly with the governor.

Addressing Governor Adeleke, the Inspector-General said he was aware of complaints that the governor and some political stakeholders were dissatisfied with the performance of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.

Disu said he also received a briefing from the Commissioner of Police alleging that some suspects wanted by the police were taking refuge inside the Osun State Government House.

"If that is true, why should suspects be in the Government House?" the Inspector-General said, adding that he had already advised the Commissioner of Police on the appropriate legal steps to take regarding the allegation.

The Inspector-General further stated that he had received allegations against different political groups, noting that no individual or political party would be allowed to shield criminal elements or undermine public safety in the state.

Although Disu did not identify the alleged suspects or provide evidence publicly during the meeting, he stressed that anyone found to be involved in criminal activities would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Governor Adeleke responded by assuring the Inspector-General that no one would receive protection from his administration if found to have committed any crime.

According to the governor, security agencies should arrest and prosecute any individual involved in criminal activities, regardless of political affiliation or personal relationship. Adeleke was quoted as saying that even if his own son committed a criminal offence, he should be arrested and prosecuted.

The Inspector-General's visit formed part of wider consultations with political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies and other stakeholders aimed at preventing violence before, during and after the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State.

During a stakeholders' meeting in Osogbo, Disu expressed concern over the recent wave of political violence in the state, noting that more than 20 people had reportedly lost their lives in politically related incidents in recent months.

He warned politicians and their supporters against sponsoring violence or harbouring suspected criminals, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force would remain neutral while ensuring that anyone responsible for violence or other criminal acts faces justice.

Disu directed the Osun State Commissioner of Police to pursue criminal suspects wherever they may be hiding, insisting that no location or individual would be considered above the law.

The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to providing adequate security before, during and after the governorship election, while urging political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and within the confines of the law.

His remarks come amid heightened political activities in Osun State, where security agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to prevent electoral violence and maintain public order ahead of the poll.
