Sokoto, Nigeria – July 4, 2026 – Armed bandits have reportedly killed a village head, his son and four other residents during a fresh attack on a community in Sokoto State, underscoring the worsening security crisis affecting parts of north-west Nigeria.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, July 3, 2026, was carried out by heavily armed gunmen who stormed the community and opened fire on residents before fleeing. Local sources said the village head was among those targeted and killed alongside his son, while four other residents also lost their lives in the assault.

Residents said the attackers operated for several minutes, forcing villagers to flee into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities in search of safety. The incident has heightened fears among residents who have endured repeated attacks by armed groups operating across Sokoto State.

Community members described the killings as another devastating blow to local efforts to restore normal life, saying many families have again been displaced by the violence. Several homes were reportedly deserted as survivors sought refuge in safer areas.

Security personnel were said to have been deployed to the affected area following the attack, while efforts were launched to pursue the fleeing assailants and restore calm. Authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the incident.

The latest killings come amid a renewed wave of deadly attacks across Sokoto State, where armed bandit groups have continued to target rural communities through killings, kidnappings and large-scale cattle rustling. Only days earlier, gunmen attacked other communities in the state, killing several residents and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.

Sokoto remains one of the states most affected by bandit violence in north-west Nigeria. Despite repeated military operations and increased security deployments, many rural communities continue to face attacks that have disrupted farming, commercial activities and daily life.

Security analysts say the persistent attacks highlight the need for stronger intelligence gathering, sustained military operations and closer cooperation between security agencies and local communities to dismantle criminal networks operating across the region.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the latest attack as residents call for improved security measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives.
