Maiduguri, Borno State – July 4, 2026 – At least one person has been killed and nine others injured after a passenger trailer struck an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Komala village axis in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, in an incident linked to suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP activity.

The explosion occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on July 2, 2026, when the vehicle, travelling from Maiduguri to Damboa and driven by Isa Uba, hit the explosive device reportedly planted along the busy route. Security sources cited in counter-insurgency reports said the device was believed to have been planted by insurgents operating in the area, which has witnessed repeated attacks in recent years.

According to security accounts, the blast killed one passenger instantly, while nine others sustained varying degrees of injury. The victims were travelling in a commercial trailer that was also conveying passengers, a common but risky practice on some northern transport routes.

A coordinated emergency response was quickly launched after the incident, involving troops of the Nigerian military, police tactical units, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) experts, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) specialists, as well as members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local vigilante hunters. The teams were deployed to secure the area and prevent secondary attacks.

Rescue operations saw the injured victims evacuated to medical facilities in Maiduguri for treatment, while the body of the deceased was recovered and later released to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites, according to security sources.

Explosive disposal experts later declared the scene safe after carrying out controlled procedures, while security forces reportedly intensified patrols and clearance operations in surrounding communities to prevent further incidents or movement of suspected insurgents.

The Borno corridor, particularly routes linking Maiduguri to southern parts of the state such as Damboa, has remained vulnerable to improvised explosive devices and ambushes, despite ongoing military operations aimed at degrading insurgent capabilities in the region.

Authorities have not yet issued an official casualty confirmation but say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the planting of the device and to identify those responsible for the attack.

Security agencies have continued to urge motorists and residents in affected areas to exercise caution and report suspicious movements as part of wider counter-insurgency efforts.
