The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has recovered N5.79 billion in proceeds of crime between January and June 2026, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing anti-corruption campaign aimed at strengthening accountability, safeguarding public funds, and enhancing national security. According to the commission's half-year performance report, which was obtained by news media on Sunday, 5 July 2026, the exact amount recovered within the review period stood at N5,789,681,925.02. The ICPC said the recovery formed part of broader efforts to safeguard public resources, strengthen institutional integrity, and promote transparency across government agencies and public institutions.
The anti-graft agency also recorded notable achievements in its prosecution and prevention efforts during the same period. The commission received 271 petitions, of which 234 cases were assigned for investigation. From these investigations, 25 cases were successfully filed before various courts across the country, resulting in 20 convictions. The ICPC also intensified its corruption prevention strategies by conducting 33 systems studies and corruption risk assessments, carrying out 42 corruption monitoring exercises, and inaugurating 58 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units across ministries, departments, and agencies. Additionally, the commission expanded its public enlightenment campaigns, organising 291 sensitisation sessions and conferences that reached 199,291 participants nationwide, while establishing 68 Anti-Corruption Clubs in schools to promote ethical values and integrity among young Nigerians.
In its performance report, the ICPC underscored the critical link between corruption and insecurity, warning that corrupt practices remain significant enablers of instability by diverting essential resources from security infrastructure and eroding public trust. "In the face of Nigeria's complex security challenges, corrupt practices remain critical enablers of instability, diverting essential resources from security infrastructure and eroding public trust," the commission stated. It added that by safeguarding public funds, strengthening institutional integrity, and promoting transparency, the ICPC directly contributes to creating a more stable and secure environment for all Nigerians. The commission stressed that the diversion of funds meant for security infrastructure and other vital sectors continues to fuel instability across the country, making the fight against corruption an integral component of national security strategy.
Highlighting the significance of its achievements, the ICPC said the results reflect more than statistics, representing a reinforced front against impunity and a tangible recovery of public assets. "These figures reflect more than statistics; they represent a reinforced front against impunity and a tangible recovery of public assets," the commission said. While acknowledging that the battle against corruption is far from over, the ICPC expressed confidence that its first-half performance in 2026 demonstrates measurable progress, enhanced public engagement, and a steadfast commitment to building a Nigeria where integrity underpins national security. The commission's half-year scorecard comes amid growing public concern over the impact of corruption on Nigeria's development and security, and the agency has reiterated its determination to sustain the momentum in the second half of the year.
