Troops of the Nigerian Army's 17 Brigade have arrested a suspected military impostor during a fighting patrol in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, recovering a fake Nigerian Army identity card, four Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, and other items in an operation that underscores the military's intensified crackdown on impersonation and criminal activities in the North-West region. The suspect was apprehended at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, 4 July 2026, by troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Malumfashi while conducting routine patrols within the town.

According to security sources, the suspect drew the attention of the troops after he was spotted wearing a woodland camouflage three‑quarter short, which raised immediate suspicion among the patrol team. The troops stopped and questioned him, leading to a search that uncovered incriminating items. The items recovered from the suspect include a fake Nigerian Army identity card, four ATM cards, one woodland camouflage three‑quarter short, a wristwatch, and the sum of ₦17,000 in cash.

The suspect and the recovered exhibits are currently in military custody pending further investigation. Military authorities said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the impersonation of security personnel and other criminal activities in the area. They noted that impersonating members of the armed forces poses a serious threat to national security, as criminals wearing military uniforms have been linked to cases of kidnapping, robbery, and attacks on communities.

The arrest comes amid heightened security operations across Katsina State, which has witnessed repeated attacks by bandits and terrorists in recent months. Troops of the 17 Brigade, operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, Sector 2, have been conducting sustained patrols and offensive operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace to affected communities. The military has repeatedly warned that impersonation of security personnel is not a minor offence but a direct threat to national security. Criminals dressed in military uniforms have been responsible for numerous high-profile kidnappings, armed robberies, and attacks on rural communities, exploiting the trust and authority associated with military attire to evade detection and perpetrate their crimes.

The recovery of multiple ATM cards from the suspect has raised further questions about the scope of his activities and possible criminal links. Investigators are working to determine whether the suspect was operating alone or as part of a larger syndicate involved in impersonation, fraud, or other criminal enterprises. Military sources have reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding public trust and enhancing security in Katsina State, vowing to sustain the momentum of operations against all forms of criminality. As the investigation continues, the arrest serves as a stark warning to those who would exploit the uniform of the nation's security forces for illicit purposes: the military remains vigilant, and impunity will not be tolerated.
