A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died from severe injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine, on 29 June 2026, succumbing to her wounds in a German hospital on 5 July 2026 despite desperate efforts by medical teams in both countries to save her life. Marian, a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University, was just days away from receiving her diploma when the attack occurred, a tragedy compounded by the death of her close friend and fellow student, Fatima Huseynova, who was killed instantly at the scene.

The attack took place in the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv when Russian forces dropped guided aerial bombs on the city. At the time, Marian and her friend, 23-year-old Fatima Huseynova, a medical student from Azerbaijan, were rushing to a pre-graduation photoshoot on the day before they were scheduled to receive their diplomas. The two were walking along Kotlyara Street when the bombs struck. Huseynova died at the scene. Marian suffered catastrophic injuries, including 90 per cent burns to her body, and was rushed to hospital.

Doctors in Kharkiv fought to stabilise her condition and managed to do so before she was transferred to a clinic in Germany for advanced medical treatment at the end of that week. Despite the efforts of medical teams in both Ukraine and Germany, Marian succumbed to her injuries on 5 July 2026. The Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death in a statement, describing her as a bright, sincere, and kind-hearted person. "Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others," the university said.

A talented student who enrolled at the university in 2020, Marian had participated in international internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Turkey in 2025. The university remembered her as a capable, responsible, and diligent student who consistently demonstrated high academic results. "In the memory of teachers, friends, classmates and all who knew her, she will forever remain a talented student, a good person and an integral part of the large family of Kharkiv National Medical University," the institution said in its tribute.

Her death came just days after the same attack claimed the life of her friend, Fatima, who was killed at the scene. Huseynova, a 23-year-old medical student who had also returned to Kharkiv to receive her diploma, was buried in Azerbaijan. The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office confirmed Marian's death and expressed condolences to her family. The attack on 29 June left 12 people injured, eight of whom suffered blast and shrapnel wounds, while four others experienced acute stress reactions. Ukrainian authorities and international organisations have consistently condemned Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure and cities as war crimes.

Marian's death adds to the mounting toll of foreign students who have lost their lives in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion began. Nigerian students, in particular, have been among the many international students who remained in the country to complete their studies despite the ongoing conflict. For Marian, who had survived years of war and was on the cusp of realising her dream of becoming a doctor, the end came tragically close to her moment of triumph. Her family, friends, and the academic community now mourn a promising life cut short by a war that has claimed countless innocent lives. A university that remembered her as a light that "easily found common ground with people" has lost a daughter. And a young woman who had dedicated her life to healing others has herself become a victim of one of the most brutal conflicts of the modern era.
