Residents of Gidan Mai Turu community in Kanwa Ward, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, are fleeing their homes in panic after heavily armed bandits issued a chilling ultimatum ordering them to vacate the area or face deadly consequences. The directive, which was delivered to the community over the weekend, has triggered a mass exodus, with families hurriedly gathering their belongings and abandoning their ancestral homes in search of safety. Local sources confirmed the development on Monday, 6 July 2026, describing the situation as desperate, with many residents now taking refuge in neighbouring communities or trekking long distances to reach safer locations.

According to community sources, the bandits, who have maintained a strong presence in the area for years, delivered the ultimatum through intermediaries, warning that any resident found remaining in the community after the deadline would be attacked. The threat has left families with no choice but to abandon their homes, farmlands, and livelihoods, adding to the already staggering number of internally displaced persons in Zamfara State. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said the community had been living under constant fear of attacks for months, but the latest ultimatum was the final straw. "We have nowhere to run. We are leaving everything behind because we know they will carry out their threat. They have done it to other communities," the resident said.

The ultimatum to Gidan Mai Turu is the latest in a series of coercive tactics employed by bandit groups across Zamfara and neighbouring states to force communities to submit to their control, pay illegal levies, or abandon their lands altogether. In Zurmi Local Government Area, which has become one of the epicentres of banditry in the North-West, armed groups have imposed a shadow tax system on rural communities, with farmers forced to pay levies to access their own fields. Those who cannot pay risk death or abduction. In June 2026, farmers in Zurmi stopped planting entirely after 28 people were kidnapped and two killed within two days. The situation has been compounded by the fact that some communities have been left without security presence, with troops reportedly withdrawn from certain areas due to operational challenges.

The humanitarian toll of the banditry crisis in Zamfara has been staggering. According to the International Organization for Migration, armed bandit attacks in Kanwa ward of Zurmi LGA in February 2026 displaced a total of 2,710 individuals from 520 households, including 1,516 children, 682 women, and 512 men. In a separate attack on Dauran town in Zurmi LGA on Thursday, 2 July 2026, bandits set fire to the home of a prominent community elder and kidnapped several locals. The violence has also devastated agricultural production, threatening food security across the region. The north produces 70 per cent of Nigeria's grain, and the loss of planting windows due to insecurity means smaller harvests, hunger, and inflation.

The ultimatum to Gidan Mai Turu has drawn urgent appeals from local leaders and residents for government intervention. Community leaders have called on Governor Dauda Lawal and security agencies to deploy additional troops to the area and prevent the bandits from carrying out their threat. However, Governor Lawal has maintained a hardline stance against negotiating with bandits, vowing to sustain military operations until criminals either surrender or face the full weight of the law. In a statement on Sunday, 5 July 2026, the Governor's Chief of Staff, Mukhtar Musa, reiterated that the administration would never negotiate with bandits and urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely intelligence.

Residents of Gidan Mai Turu, however, fear that without immediate protection, they will suffer the same fate as countless other communities that have been forced to abandon their homes. The mass displacement triggered by the ultimatum has overwhelmed neighbouring communities, which are already struggling to accommodate internally displaced persons from other attacks. Humanitarian agencies have warned that the situation is likely to worsen as the rainy season continues, with bandits exploiting the difficult terrain and limited access for security reinforcements. As families continue to flee Gidan Mai Turu, the question remains: how many more rural communities must be forced from their homes before meaningful protection reaches them?
