The University of Ibadan Students' Union Government has announced the safe release of Miss Tomisin Abolarin, a 300-level law student who was abducted alongside seven other individuals on 14 June 2026 while returning from a Scripture Union national conference in Okigwe, Imo State. The confirmation came in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026, bringing to an end a 22-day ordeal that had sparked widespread concern within the university community and among families of the victims. The Students' Union Government, in a statement jointly signed by President Temidayo S. Adeboye and General Secretary Joshua O. Shontan, said the release was confirmed by relevant authorities and representatives of the Scripture Union organisation.
Tomisin, who serves as the Vice President of the Scripture Union Campus Fellowship at the University of Ibadan and the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Students' Fellowship, was among a group travelling back to Ibadan after attending the annual conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe. The group lost contact with family and friends shortly after departing, and their disappearance triggered immediate concern after Tomisin failed to sit for her scheduled faculty examinations on the Monday and Tuesday following the conference. The Students' Union Government had initially clarified that Tomisin was the only University of Ibadan student among those abducted, dismissing social media claims that eight UI students were missing.
The victims were abducted alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Uwem Cosmas, and other conference participants. Their release on Monday followed sustained efforts by security agencies, the university management, the leadership of the Scripture Union, and other stakeholders whose dedication contributed to the successful outcome. The Students' Union Government expressed gratitude to all parties involved, noting that the released individuals are currently undergoing necessary post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations. "We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon," Adeboye stated in the official announcement.
The university community had remained on edge throughout the period of captivity, with students, faculty, and staff rallying in prayer and solidarity. The Students' Union Government had earlier appealed for calm as efforts intensified to secure the safe return of the abducted students. The release brings relief to a university that has faced repeated security challenges in recent months, including the unresolved abduction of 46 schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State on 15 May 2026. While the circumstances surrounding the release remain unclear, the Students' Union Government expressed gratitude for the prayers, patience, and unwavering support of the university community throughout the period of captivity. "Your compassion and unity have been truly encouraging," the union stated, while praying for the complete healing, restoration, and well-being of everyone affected by the abduction.
