Popular Nigerian TikTok content creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, and his associate, Bello Oladipo, have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court over an alleged confrontation with police officers along the Coastal Road in Lekki, Lagos. The duo appeared before the court on Monday, 6 July 2026, facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy to resist public officers, obstruction of police officers in the discharge of their lawful duties, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The charges stem from an incident on Thursday, 2 July 2026, when police officers intercepted Peller for allegedly driving a vehicle without a registration number plate. According to the prosecution, Peller claimed he had recently purchased the vehicle, but the officers dismissed his explanation and insisted he accompany them to the station. The situation escalated after the TikToker began recording the encounter on his mobile phone. Peller later alleged that the officers became hostile, claiming that one officer dragged his shirt and pointed a firearm at him. The police have disputed those allegations.
The charge sheet, as seen in court documents, detailed the three counts against the defendants. Count one accused Bello Oladipo and Habeeb Hamzat of conspiring to commit a felony, to wit: resisting public officers, an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Count two alleged that the defendants obstructed ASP Agbede Victor and three other police officers while they were engaged in the discharge of their constituted duties, an offence contrary to and punishable by Section 117(1)(2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Count three accused the pair of unlawfully conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace by threatening and videoing police officers while performing their lawful duties, an offence punishable under Section 168(a) & (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all three counts. Following their plea, the court granted each defendant bail in the sum of β¦500,000 with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a blood relative, and the court further directed both men to present evidence of two years' tax clearance certificates as part of their bail conditions. The case has been adjourned until 11 August 2026 for further proceedings.
The arraignment came after Peller had spent several days in police custody. Fellow content creator Tunde Perry had earlier raised alarm over Peller's detention, revealing that the TikTok star was arrested on Friday, 3 July 2026, while returning home from a shooting location in the Lekki area of Lagos. Perry disclosed that Peller was arrested for driving a tinted car and for not having a number plate. He noted that the incident happened in Lekki but was later transferred to Ikeja. Perry also revealed that Peller had encountered area boys who reportedly demanded N250,000 from him at the shooting location shortly before his arrest.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing trend of confrontations between citizens and law enforcement officers. The court's decision to require tax clearance certificates as part of the bail conditions has also sparked discussion, as it underscores the increasing emphasis on tax compliance in legal proceedings. As the case progresses, both Peller and Oladipo remain on bail awaiting their next court appearance on 11 August 2026.
