The Kano State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has firmly dismissed reports claiming that its state executive committee was dissolved and replaced with a caretaker committee by the party's national leadership, describing the announcement as false, unconstitutional, and lacking any official communication. The denial came in swift reaction to a press conference addressed earlier on Monday, 6 July 2026, in Kano by the party's Deputy National Chairman for the North-West, Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed, who had announced the dissolution of the state executive and the constitution of a caretaker committee to oversee the party's affairs.

Speaking with PUNCH Online on Monday, the Kano State Chairman of the ADC, Musa Ungogo, insisted that no such decision had been communicated to the state chapter. "There is no truth in the claim that the Kano State executive has been dissolved. No such decision has been communicated to us by the party's national leadership," Ungogo said. He argued that the purported action lacked constitutional backing and questioned why Kano was singled out for dissolution while other state chapters remained untouched. "There is no similar action taken in any other state. So why Kano? The claim is unfounded and does not follow the party's constitutional procedures," he added.

Ungogo maintained that the Kano State executive remained the party's authentic leadership and would continue to discharge its responsibilities until a lawful directive was issued by the appropriate organs of the ADC. His position was echoed by the state chapter in a subsequent statement, which described the purported dissolution as false, unconstitutional, and an attempt to create unnecessary division within the party. The state leadership urged party members across Kano's 44 local government areas to disregard the announcement and continue to recognise only the duly elected state executive.

Earlier on Monday, Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed had addressed a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Kano, where she announced the dissolution of the state executive and the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by Alhaji Umar Bala as chairman and Isma'il Musa as secretary. She said the action was taken in line with the party's constitution, the Electoral Act, and the need to preserve the unity, continuity, and constitutional integrity of the ADC in Kano State. According to her, the decision became necessary to address a leadership vacuum and prevent uncertainty within the party's state chapter. "This important action is not out of preference, but out of constitutional duty. Every action taken has been guided by the Constitution of our party, the Electoral Act, and our collective responsibility to protect the future of the ADC in Kano State," Mohammed said.

She urged party members to support the transitional arrangement, insisting that the move should not be interpreted as a verdict on the loyalty or contributions of members who had built the party in the state. "The constitution of a Caretaker Committee must never be interpreted as a judgment on the commitment, loyalty or contributions of the thousands of faithful members of our party across Kano State. Far from it. Our members remain the greatest strength of this party," she stated.

The conflicting claims have created significant uncertainty over the leadership of the ADC in Kano, with both the state executive and the newly announced caretaker committee laying claim to the party's structure in the state. The state chapter has rejected the caretaker committee, maintaining that it has no legal standing under the party's constitution. The elected executive committee, the state leadership insisted, remains intact, functional, and committed to advancing the objectives of the party in Kano State. "Members should ignore reports suggesting otherwise," the state chapter said.

The deepening disagreement highlights growing internal tensions within the ADC as the party continues efforts to strengthen its structures ahead of future elections. Political observers say the public disagreement between the national leadership and the Kano State chapter could further deepen divisions within the party and affect its mobilisation efforts in one of Nigeria's key political states if not resolved promptly. The ADC, which is supporting the presidential candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, now faces the challenge of resolving the leadership crisis without further destabilising its operations in the state.

The ADC's internal wrangling comes amid a broader political realignment in Kano State, where the party has been seeking to establish a foothold ahead of the 2027 general elections. The crisis has raised questions about the party's ability to present a united front in one of Nigeria's most politically significant states. How the African Democratic Congress resolves this dispute will test its internal dispute mechanisms and determine whether the party can maintain its relevance in Kano State. For now, the administrative gridlock ensures that the party remains a house divided against itself, with both factions claiming legitimacy and control over the party's structures.
