The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has raised grave concerns about his personal safety and alleged that the Federal Government is systematically frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures, warning that he may not even be alive to contest the next presidential poll. Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, excerpts of which were widely shared on social media platforms on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
When asked whether there was a possibility he might not be a candidate in 2027, Obi responded with stark alarm: "Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I'm telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive". He, however, clarified that he was not making a direct accusation but described daily experiences of obstruction. "It's not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. Because you do things that you think would be normal—it is not normal anymore. They won't come directly and say, 'Oh, we're doing this,' but you can see their hand in virtually everything".
Asked whether the government was attacking him personally, the former Anambra State governor said the alleged treatment extended to members of the opposition. "They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all".
To illustrate his claims, Obi cited a recent incident at an airport where he alleged that officials locked his vehicle while ignoring other parked cars. "I had a case recently at the airport, where people who work in the airport came and locked my car. My car. And I said, 'It's me.' The person in charge said he doesn't care. But I said, 'Look at the cars of other people.' And you could see them talking to each other, as if, 'Who is this one?'".
Obi further alleged that some people now avoided publicly associating with him for fear of becoming targets. "And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are fearing that if they greet me…". He also claimed that some supporters had discouraged him from attending family events. "And I have people send me invitations and say, 'My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don't come'".
Despite the alleged harassment, Obi maintained that he remains committed to advocating for a more united and compassionate Nigeria. "We have divided the country, building hatred among us. That's why I keep saying, I want to bring back unity where there's division. I want to show love, compassion, care." He urged political leaders to focus on solving Nigeria's pressing problems instead of becoming consumed by early election campaigns.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not issued any response to Obi's allegations. The interview has sparked widespread debate on social media, with some Nigerians expressing solidarity with Obi while others questioned the lack of evidence to support his claims.
Obi, who was the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and came third with over six million votes, is now seeking the presidency again in 2027 under the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress. His remarks come amid ongoing political debates and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition figures continue to voice concerns over the state of democratic governance and political freedoms in the country.
