Operatives of the Military Intelligence Brigade under Sector 3 of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside the Civilian Joint Task Force, have arrested a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province informant accused of helping terrorists identify wealthy kidnapping targets in Borno State. The suspect, identified as Isa Janyu, 30, was apprehended at approximately 7:20 p.m. on 4 July 2026 during an intelligence-led operation at Kasuwan Shanu in Monguno town, according to intelligence sources who spoke with counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.

Items recovered from the suspect reportedly included a Tecno mobile phone, a knife, a comb, a mirror, and ₦10,000 in cash. Preliminary investigations revealed that Janyu, a native of Arianna Mai Massallachi Village in Kukawa Local Government Area, allegedly specialised in identifying affluent residents for ISWAP members to facilitate kidnapping-for-ransom operations. The suspect is currently in the custody of the Headquarters Sector 3 Military Intelligence Brigade, where further investigations are ongoing.

Military sources said the arrest forms part of sustained intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling terrorist support networks and disrupting the activities of informants providing critical intelligence to insurgent groups operating in the North-East. The sources added that although the security situation across the theatre remains relatively calm, it is still unpredictable, with troops maintaining a high level of operational readiness and sustained offensive pressure against terrorist elements.

The development comes amid a separate incident in which an Improvised Explosive Device exploded along the Komala village axis in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, killing one person and injuring nine others after a trailer conveying passengers struck the device on 2 July 2026. A joint response team comprising military personnel, police tactical units, Explosive Ordnance Disposal operatives, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, and local hunters was deployed to the scene after the explosion.

The arrest of Isa Janyu represents a significant blow to ISWAP's intelligence-gathering capabilities, as informants play a crucial role in enabling the terrorist group to identify and target wealthy individuals for ransom, a primary source of funding for their operations. The military's sustained intelligence-driven operations continue to degrade the ability of insurgent groups to operate freely in the region, as troops remain on high alert to counter emerging threats.
