A 40-year-old commercial bus driver, Kabiru Olajide, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre after appearing before an Igbosere Magistrate's Court in Lagos over allegations that he stabbed a husband and wife during a dispute over an unpaid N75,000 drinks bill. Olajide was arraigned on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, on a five-count charge bordering on assault occasioning harm, malicious damage, stealing, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector John Okwu, the defendant committed the offences on June 20, 2026, at about 2:30 p.m. at No. 6 Salvation Street, Ifako, in the Gbagada area of Lagos. The complainant, Akinbiyi Olarotimi, and his wife, Abosede, were at home when the defendant visited to demand payment of a N75,000 debt for drinks he had allegedly supplied. An argument ensued, and the defendant reportedly attacked the couple with a broken bottle and a knife, stabbing both victims on their hands and heads.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendant also caused malicious damage to the couple's door and stole their plasma television and home theatre set. The offences, he said, contravened Sections 168(d), 173, 287, 339, and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Olajide pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Following his plea, the defence counsel, Mr A. Okeke, applied for bail on behalf of his client, promising that the defendant would provide reliable sureties. However, the prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant pending the outcome of the case.

Chief Magistrate Mrs O. S. Amzat, in her ruling, ordered the defendant's remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to August 24, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application. The court also ordered the prosecutor to serve the defendant's counsel with all necessary court documents before the next adjourned date.

The case is one of several violent disputes over financial disagreements that have escalated into serious physical attacks in Lagos. The couple, who are still recovering from their injuries, have expressed relief that the defendant is in custody. However, they remain anxious about their safety and are hoping for a swift resolution of the case.
