The Yobe State Police Command has intensified enforcement against the rising use of unregistered vehicles, obscured number plates, and unauthorised tinted glass, which criminal elements frequently exploit to commit offences, including drug trafficking and other violent crimes. In a major crackdown, the Command has so far impounded 67 vehicles found in violation of traffic and security regulations across the state, according to a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, and signed by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim.
The enforcement operation targets vehicles operating without valid registration, those with covered, faded, or obscured number plates, and vehicles fitted with tinted glass but lacking the required permits. The Command observed that such violations pose significant security risks, as unregistered vehicles and concealed identities are commonly used to facilitate criminal activity, including the transportation of illicit drugs and other criminal operations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kamfani Jibrin, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to sustain the enforcement exercise, while emphasising that officers must maintain professionalism, respect citizens' rights, and enforce zero tolerance for extortion throughout the operation. The CP warned that any vehicle found in violation of the regulations would be impounded, and offenders would face prosecution under the law.
The Command has cautioned all vehicle owners and motorists to ensure proper registration of their vehicles, display clearly visible and authentic number plates, and obtain the necessary permits before using tinted glass. It also appealed to residents to comply with all vehicle registration and traffic regulations, noting that the enforcement exercise is aimed at enhancing public safety, preventing crime, and ensuring a secure environment for all residents of Yobe State. Residents were further encouraged to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
The crackdown underscores the Command's commitment to addressing the security threats posed by unregistered vehicles and concealed identities, which have been linked to a range of criminal activities in the state. By impounding 67 vehicles and warning offenders of prosecution, the police aim to deter motorists from flouting traffic and security regulations, while reinforcing public safety across Yobe State.
