The Edo State Police Command has announced a statewide restriction of movement ahead of Saturday's local government council elections, as part of comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process across the state's 18 local government areas. The command said movement would be restricted across the state from 12:00 midnight to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, 11 July 2026, according to a statement issued on Thursday, 9 July 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem.

The restriction, introduced in collaboration with other security agencies, is aimed at protecting voters, electoral officials, and sensitive election materials, as well as preventing any breakdown of law and order during the electoral exercise. The police command said all vehicular and human movement within the state would be prohibited during the restriction period. However, officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, accredited election observers, duly accredited media personnel, security agencies, emergency responders, and other essential service providers on election duty are exempted from the restriction.

The police urged residents to comply fully with the directive, warning that security operatives have been strategically deployed across the 18 local government areas of the state to enforce the restriction and maintain law and order. The command warned that any person or group found violating the restriction or engaging in activities capable of disrupting the electoral process would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. "Any person or group found violating the restriction or engaging in acts capable of disrupting the electoral process will be dealt with in accordance with the law," the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to safeguard the election. Agbonika urged eligible voters to come out peacefully and exercise their civic responsibility in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission. The police commissioner reaffirmed the command's commitment to ensuring a free, fair, peaceful, and credible electoral process across the state.

The local government election, scheduled to hold on Saturday, 11 July 2026, will see 12 political parties contest for chairmanship and councillorship positions across Edo's 18 local government areas. Major opposition parties, including the Labour Party, the African Democratic Congress, and the Peoples Democratic Party, did not field any candidates for the election.
