The Federal Government has launched a formal push to correct what it describes as a long-standing identity crisis surrounding Osubi Airport in Delta State, with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, formally requesting the International Air Transport Association to review the airport's existing three-letter location code, "QRW." The move, announced on Monday, August 17, 2026, seeks to secure a new code that more accurately reflects the airport's official name and its actual geographical location, ending decades of confusion that has seen the facility routinely misidentified as "Warri Airport."
In a letter addressed to the IATA Area Manager for West and Central Africa, Dr. Samuel Fatokun, Keyamo argued that the continued use of the QRW code, which is associated with the broader Warri identity, "does not adequately reflect the airport's actual name and physical location." Osubi Airport, which bears the International Civil Aviation Organisation four-letter location indicator DNSU, is physically situated in Osubi town, near Warri, Delta State. While the airport is sometimes informally identified as "Warri Airport" because it serves the Warri metropolitan area, the Federal Government has now drawn a firm line, insisting that its established and appropriate geographical designation is Osubi Airport.
In an aviation industry where three-letter codes are used on flight tickets, baggage tags, boarding passes, reservation systems and international travel platforms, the government argues that "the correct identification of an airport matters." A wrong or confusing identity can potentially create uncertainty for travellers and stakeholders, a problem that Keyamo is determined to resolve. "Osubi is not Warri and Warri is not Osubi," the minister declared, drawing a clear line between the airport's formal identity and its informal association with the nearby commercial hub.
The Federal Government has asked IATA to initiate a formal review of QRW and consider a replacement code that bears a clearer relationship to the name Osubi. Among the possible alternatives suggested for consideration are OSU, OSB, SUB and QSB, while acknowledging that the final designation remains subject to IATA's established coding procedures and availability.
The minister's intervention extends beyond the IATA request. In a related directive, airlines operating flights to and from the airport have been instructed to ensure that passenger-facing documents properly identify the facility as Osubi, Delta State. Flight tickets, luggage tags, boarding passes and other relevant documentation are expected to reflect the airport's proper designation. Keyamo has also directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and other relevant aviation agencies to ensure that the correct designation is consistently reflected across their systems, records, publications and operational interfaces.
Keyamo believes such a change would help "strengthen the airport's identity while reducing potential ambiguity for passengers and other stakeholders." The minister stressed that the clarification is intended to ensure geographical and operational accuracy, rather than create confusion around the airport's role in serving the wider Warri metropolitan area. The Federal Government said the move is part of its broader effort to ensure that Nigeria's aviation infrastructure, locations and operational information are accurately represented in national and international aviation systems.
As the world's aviation governing body considers the request, the fate of the QRW code hangs in the balance. For passengers, airlines and aviation stakeholders, the message from the Federal Government is unmistakable: Osubi is not Warri, and it is time the world knew it.
