It was supposed to be just another Monday afternoon in Bununu Town, Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State. But for three residents, the afternoon of August 17, 2026, became a nightmare of blood and terror as a gang of hoodlums descended on them with sharp weapons, inflicting severe injuries to their heads and bodies. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, could have been far worse had it not been for the timely intervention of police operatives conducting routine patrol in the area. The patrol team sighted the hoodlums in the act and moved swiftly, arresting two of the assailants and rescuing the three victims, who were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital, Bununu, where they are currently in stable condition.

The Bauchi State Police Command, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the incident and identified the arrested suspects as Ibrahim Hassan, 23, and Bilal Hassan, 22, both residents of Bununu Town. According to the command, other members of the gang fled the scene upon the arrival of the police. During the arrest, operatives recovered a sharp knife and a sharp-edged animal horn, locally known as "kaho," from the suspects – weapons that could have caused even more grievous harm to the victims. The suspects, who reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, are now in police custody as a thorough investigation commences.

The swift response of the police patrol team not only saved the lives of the three victims but also sent a strong message to criminal elements lurking in the community. The victims, aged 30, 31 and 28, all males and residents of Bununu, sustained injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies, but are now receiving medical attention and are said to be in stable condition. The police action ensured that the attack did not escalate into a more tragic outcome.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation with a view to prosecuting the suspects in court. He also issued a stern warning that the command would not tolerate thuggery, hooliganism or any form of violent conduct capable of threatening peace and public safety in the state. "The Command will not condone any act of thuggery, hooliganism or violent conduct capable of threatening public peace," he warned. The police have also deployed additional personnel to Bununu to strengthen security, monitor developments and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

The arrest of the two suspects and the rescue of the victims have restored calm to the community, with residents now able to go about their daily activities without the fear of sudden attacks. The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The operation stands as a testament to the effectiveness of proactive policing and the importance of community cooperation in the fight against crime. For now, the people of Bununu can breathe a little easier, knowing that the long arm of the law is watching, and that those who threaten their peace will not escape justice.
