Barely three weeks after he publicly condemned President Gianni Infantino's controversial plan to sell a stake in FIFA's commercial empire, Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour has been shown the door. The world football governing body confirmed on Monday, August 17, 2026, that Lamour's employment had been terminated, effective immediately, in a move that has sent shockwaves through the corridors of FIFA's Zurich headquarters and reignited fierce debate over Infantino's leadership style.

In a brief and notably terse statement, a FIFA spokesperson announced: "The working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as Chief Operating Officer has ended on 17 August 2026. FIFA thanks Kevin for his two years of service and wishes him the best of luck for the future." The organisation declined to offer any further explanation, but the timing of the dismissal left little room for ambiguity. It came less than three weeks after Lamour had delivered a devastating critique of Infantino's now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project – a plan to create a $20 billion commercial subsidiary and sell up to 20 per cent of it to private investors.

Lamour, who joined FIFA in November 2024 after a long career at UEFA, had described the FFE proposal as "the project of one person" and accused Infantino of "deceiving" the organisation's own administration. In a statement that has since become a lightning rod for the growing dissent within FIFA, Lamour wrote: "Our mission – the mission of the hundreds of passionate, dedicated, and exemplary FIFA employees – is to serve football. A president must bring people together, unite them, and inspire them. Today, we are experiencing the opposite." He acknowledged that his public criticism might cost him his job, adding defiantly: "If that means I lose my job, then so be it. I will understand and respect that decision. At least I'll sleep well tonight."

The FFE plan had been met with widespread opposition from some of football's most powerful confederations. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation issued a joint letter warning that the proposal threatened the integrity of the game, with UEFA even threatening a boycott of the World Cup. The plan was ultimately abandoned, but not before Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino, had resigned in protest. Lamour's dismissal, coming on the heels of Cordeiro's departure, has intensified scrutiny of Infantino's leadership as he prepares to seek a fourth term at the FIFA Congress in March 2027.

According to a letter sent to FIFA Council members and seen by BBC Sport, Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom informed staff on Monday evening that the decision had been made "after careful consideration and with great respect for Kevin, both personally and professionally". The letter added: "Following recent discussions, FIFA and our Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Lamour have agreed to part ways." However, insiders told BBC Sport that Lamour was not invited to a meeting of senior executives in Morocco earlier this month, where Infantino received the backing of key allies, suggesting that the rift had been widening for weeks.

Lamour's dismissal has drawn sharp reactions from across the football world. For his supporters, he is a whistleblower who spoke truth to power, a man who dared to challenge a president many believe has become autocratic. For his detractors, he was a disloyal subordinate who overstepped the boundaries of his role. But beyond the personal drama, his departure raises fundamental questions about the culture of fear that appears to have taken root at the top of world football. The message from Zurich is unambiguous: dissent carries a price, and even the third-highest-ranking official at FIFA is not immune.

As Infantino navigates the most significant challenge to his authority since he was first elected in 2016, the sacking of Lamour will be seen by many as a heavy-handed attempt to silence internal opposition. Whether it will succeed in restoring order or simply embolden his critics remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the man who said he would sleep well even if he lost his job has now lost it – and his prophecy has become a reality that will haunt FIFA for months to come.
