A suspected foreign bandit, believed to be from the Niger Republic, has been apprehended in Omifon, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, with a bag containing Nigerian Army uniforms in what security sources describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against cross-border criminal infiltration. The arrest, which was captured in a viral video circulating on social media platforms on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, has once again exposed the growing menace of foreign nationals exploiting Nigeria's porous borders to collaborate with local criminal networks.
The video shows the suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, being paraded by security operatives. Items recovered from his possession include a bag filled with military camouflage uniforms, a development that has raised serious concerns about the possibility of criminal elements using military attire to impersonate soldiers and perpetrate violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and attacks on communities.
According to a security source who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the suspect was intercepted by a combined team of police and local vigilantes following intelligence reports about suspicious movements in the Omifon area. "The suspect was caught with Nigerian Army uniforms, and preliminary investigations suggest he may have been planning to use them to gain access to communities and carry out attacks," the source said.
The Ondo State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the arrest, but the development has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the ease with which foreign criminals are able to infiltrate the country. The arrest comes amid growing security challenges in Ondo State, where banditry and kidnapping have become increasingly prevalent. Just weeks ago, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa vowed to tackle insecurity in the state, following a series of attacks that claimed several lives in communities such as Imafon and other parts of Akure North.
Omifon, where the suspect was arrested, has been a flashpoint for criminal activities in recent years. In March 2026, a suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to steal from a power transformer in the community. In February 2026, the Ondo State Police Command arrested a landlady for allegedly poisoning her tenant's three-year-old son in Omifon. The latest arrest adds to the growing list of criminal incidents in the area.
The discovery of Nigerian Army uniforms in the suspect's possession has raised alarm over the possibility of foreign terrorists and bandits infiltrating the security apparatus. The Defence Headquarters had previously warned against the unauthorized use of military camouflage, noting that criminal elements often disguise themselves as military or paramilitary personnel to perpetrate acts of lawlessness. The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, had earlier reaffirmed the ban on unauthorized use of military camouflage, stressing that only the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force are authorised to wear such attire.
As investigations continue, security agencies have intensified efforts to track down other members of the syndicate and determine the source of the military uniforms. The arrest of the foreign bandit in Omifon serves as a stark reminder of the transnational nature of crime in Nigeria's border communities and the urgent need for enhanced border security and inter-agency cooperation to prevent the infiltration of foreign criminals.
