The evening of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, was supposed to be one of preparation for the eight suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province. They had gathered at Thethangala, a hideout within the notorious Timbuktu Triangle of Borno State, and were lying in wait, apparently preparing to launch an attack on Nigerian troops deployed in the area. But before they could strike, the Guardian aircraft of the Nigerian Air Force's Air Component had already established the target overhead. At about 9:56 p.m., the precision strike was unleashed. Within minutes, all eight terrorists were neutralised, with no further movement observed after the strike, according to security sources and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
The operation, conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), followed credible intelligence indicating the presence of suspected terrorists at Thethangala, a known area of insurgent activity. The air component of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, has been at the forefront of degrading ISWAP's operational capabilities, and Tuesday's strike is part of the ongoing intensified coordinated ground and air operations against terrorist formations and their logistics networks across the North-East. The Timbuktu Triangle is regarded as a significant operational zone for ISWAP activities, with terrorists using parts of the forest axis to regroup and launch attacks against military positions and several communities.
According to security sources, the aircraft identified eight suspected terrorists who had gathered and were apparently preparing to launch an attack on Nigerian troops deployed in the area. The suspected fighters were subsequently engaged in a precision airstrike. The battle damage assessment showed all the terrorists neutralised, with no further movement observed after the strike. The operation was corroborated by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who has been tracking ISWAP activities in the Lake Chad region.
The latest operation is part of the ongoing efforts by Operation Hadin Kai to disrupt terrorist formations, logistics networks and planned attacks across the North-East. The military has intensified coordinated ground and air operations in areas where insurgents are attempting to regroup and regain operational footholds. The security situation in the North-East remains fluid, with troops maintaining heightened vigilance against possible retaliatory attacks and attempts by terrorist groups to reorganise. The military high command has continued to urge troops to sustain offensive operations against terrorist elements while maintaining operational readiness across the theatre.
The strike comes just days after the Nigerian Air Force had eliminated a key ISWAP commander, Abu Khalid Al Muhajir, and eight other fighters in a separate operation in the Sambisa Forest. That operation, which took place on August 8, had targeted a commander responsible for providing special security escorts for senior members of the group. The consistency of these precision strikes underscores the military's growing intelligence-gathering capabilities and its determination to degrade ISWAP's leadership and operational capacity. As one security source put it, "The era of ISWAP's impunity in the Timbuktu Triangle is gradually coming to an end." For the people of Borno State, who have endured years of insurgency, each successful operation brings a glimmer of hope that the nightmare may finally be ending.
