The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has delivered a stunning prediction that President Bola Tinubu will lose the 2027 presidential election before 4 p.m. on election day if the Independent National Electoral Commission conducts a free, fair and credible poll. Baba-Ahmed made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, where he also described the All Progressives Congress as a "monster eating itself up" and argued that the party's formidable political machinery would crumble under the weight of public anger and economic hardship.

"If it is a credible, free and fair election, I assure you Tinubu will lose. I won't say before 12 noon, maybe before 4 pm in the evening," Baba-Ahmed declared. The PRP chairman warned that failure to ensure a credible electoral process could pose a grave threat to Nigeria's democracy, pointing to the deep frustration among millions of Nigerians who are desperate to express their anger through the ballot. "There are people out there, millions who are very angry. They desperately want an opportunity to express their anger through the ballot, and it is very important that we allow them to exercise that right. Play around that, and you are playing around with the future of this country."

Baba-Ahmed drew a direct line from the recent Osun State governorship election, where Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party defeated the APC candidate, to the national stage in 2027. He argued that the APC's defeat in Osun, achieved without any coalition or gang-up among opposition parties, demonstrated that the ruling party could be beaten. "We didn't even see a coalition or collaboration or a gang-up against the APC. Parties all competed against one another. Yet, APC was defeated. There's no reason why this cannot repeat itself at a national level," he said.

Despite his confidence in the APC's eventual defeat, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged that unseating President Tinubu would be no easy task. He described the President as a "politically monstrous" figure who has amassed extraordinary power, including the support of 31 state governors and roughly 75 per cent of the National Assembly. "APC is a monster eating itself up and eating everybody up. You have a party that has a president that is quite possibly the most powerful president who has been given by the people around him the most awesome powers to do anything he wants to do, including the national assembly," he said.

Baba-Ahmed also took aim at President Tinubu's recent defence of INEC against allegations of bias, arguing that no president should publicly praise the electoral body before an election in which he is a contestant. "Nobody should praise INEC for conducting an election in which the president is a contestant. It's wrong, unbecoming, and all it does is that it's creating this idea that the president is courting the goodwill of INEC, which is wrong," he stated. He also criticised the President for being detached from the realities of ordinary Nigerians, pointing to the worsening economy, poverty, and the collapse of industry and agriculture in the northern part of the country.

The PRP chairman's prediction has ignited fierce debate across the political spectrum, with many interpreting his words as a rallying cry for opposition forces ahead of 2027. His reference to the Osun election as a template for national defeat has been seized upon by opposition figures who see the APC's loss in the South-West state as evidence that the ruling party's grip on power is weakening. However, critics have argued that the national political landscape is far more complex than a single state election, and that President Tinubu's control over state governors and the National Assembly gives him a significant advantage.

Baba-Ahmed's warning that a flawed election could pose a "very serious threat to Nigeria's democracy" has also resonated with civil society groups and election observers, who have expressed concerns over the integrity of the electoral process ahead of 2027. His insistence that millions of Nigerians are "very angry" and desperate to vote reflects a growing sentiment among citizens who feel that the current administration has failed to address the country's economic and security challenges.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Baba-Ahmed's prediction has added a new layer of intrigue to the political landscape. Whether his forecast of a 4 p.m. defeat for President Tinubu will prove accurate depends on the credibility of the electoral process and the ability of the opposition to translate public anger into votes. But for now, the PRP chairman has made his position unmistakably clear: in a free and fair election, the APC's dominance is far from assured, and the people's verdict may come sooner than many expect.
