The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six suspects following the circulation of a viral video showing a group of young men, commonly known as "area boys" or "agberos," harassing and intimidating motorists on a major road in the state, in an operation that has once again exposed the endemic culture of impunity that has turned Lagos roads into a hunting ground for extortionists. The video, shared on X by user @MrMekzy on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, depicts several young men surrounding a private vehicle in traffic, gesturing aggressively towards the driver, waving objects and pressing against the car in a manner that nearly damaged the side mirror. The poster wrote, "This is not even a celebrity, this is a normal person going about his day and they almost destroyed his side mirror. How are you people coping with this in Lagos? Why isn't anyone doing anything about it?"
The Lagos State Police Command, in a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, August 20, 2026, confirmed that it was aware of the trending footage and had already been monitoring the activities of the miscreants before the video went viral. The command's spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed that following the incident captured in the video, six suspects were arrested on the same road, and investigation into the matter is ongoing. "The command wishes to clarify that it had already been on the lookout for, and taking proactive measures against, miscreants involved in such activities even before the said video surfaced online," Adebisi stated. She added that officers have been strategically deployed to intensify surveillance and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The arrests, while welcome, raise troubling questions about the effectiveness of the police's so-called "proactive measures." If the command was indeed already on the lookout for these miscreants, why did it take a viral video, shared by an ordinary citizen, to prompt concrete action? The statement from the police suggests a reactive rather than proactive approach, one that only mobilises when public outrage becomes impossible to ignore. The six suspects were arrested on the same road where the incident occurred, but the police have not disclosed their identities or whether they are known to have a history of similar offences. The command's appreciation of the public for drawing attention to the matter is a tacit admission that without the viral video, these arrests might never have happened.
The incident is far from isolated. The harassment of motorists by area boys has become a recurring nightmare for Lagos residents, particularly along the Lekki-Epe Expressway and other major routes, where young men stop vehicles, particularly high-end cars, demand money from drivers, and sometimes damage vehicles or property when their demands are refused. In recent months, figures including actress Bimbo Ademoye, comedian Brain Jotter and music video director TG Omori have publicly decried harassment, extortion and vehicle damage allegedly involving street touts and area boys targeting motorists and film crews across the state. Popular disc jockey DJ Salt of Life, the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, revealed that suspected local hoodlums had damaged her car after mistaking her for her famous sibling.
The Lagos State Government has responded with a series of targeted operations, but the results have been underwhelming. The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad carried out a midnight enforcement operation along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway. Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has described the harassment of motorists as a criminal act that the state government "will not allow". Speaking in a broadcast on Nigeria Info FM, Hamzat confirmed that a number of arrests had already been made, with suspects appearing before a Magistrate Court, and said surveillance cameras installed along the Lekki-Epe Expressway had become a critical tool in identifying suspects. "A lot of people have been arrested, really. A lot of cameras are also on that road and people have been seen," he said.
Yet, despite these assurances, the harassment continues. Data released by the Lagos State Police Command show that 118 suspected criminals were arrested in coordinated operations carried out in April targeting armed robbery. The Lagos State Taskforce announced the arrest of five suspected hoodlums, known as 'Omotaku', for extorting motorists. In March 2026, the Lagos State Government arrested 25 individuals accused of harassing motorists along the Lekki axis. The recurring cycle of viral videos, public outrage and enforcement operations underscores a long-running challenge for Lagos State authorities: curbing the activities of informal street groups who have for years extracted money from motorists, traders and commuters, particularly around traffic hotspots, motor parks and busy expressways.
The police command's spokesperson appreciated members of the public for bringing the incident to the attention of the police and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that could assist the command in keeping Lagos safe. However, the onus should not be on citizens to police the streets through viral videos. The police and the state government must take proactive, sustained and visible action to dismantle the networks of area boys who have turned Lagos roads into a zone of terror. The six suspects arrested are currently in custody and investigation is ongoing, but the public will be watching closely to see whether they are prosecuted or quietly released. The command reiterated its commitment to protecting motorists and other residents from criminal activities across the state, but until the arrests translate into convictions and the streets are visibly safer, the people of Lagos have every right to remain sceptical.
